Chapter 3: The Severed Cord

Beatrice rose from her chair, her pearls rattling against her silk bodice, her aristocratic composure cracking into sharp, furious lines.

""You ungrateful little creature!"" Beatrice hissed, dropping all pretense of gentility. ""We funded this wedding! We paid for the conservatory, the orchestra, the catering! We gave you a place at our table!""

""No, Beatrice,"" Maya replied calmly. ""You didn't give me a place. You demanded that I erase where I came from as the price of admission.""

Maya turned to Julian.

Julian stood frozen between his mother and his bride, his hands twitching at his sides, his eyes darting toward the venture capitalists in the front row who were already pulling out their phones. He was a man accustomed to boardroom diplomacy—a man who calculated every moral choice by its impact on his company’s stock valuation.

""Julian,"" Maya said softly, looking into the eyes of the man she had loved for four years. ""Say something.""

Julian swallowed hard, his throat dry. ""Maya... Mother was only trying to protect the schedule. We have thirty prospective investors in this room. You're overreacting. Just... let them eat in the private room for an hour, and we'll bring them out for the cake cutting.""

Maya stared at him for three long seconds.

In those three seconds, the man she thought she knew dissolved completely, revealing the hollow, frightened boy hiding beneath five-thousand-dollar wool.

Maya reached behind her head, unpinned the cathedral veil from her hair, and laid it neatly across the center of the head table.

Then, she unclasped the diamond tennis bracelet Julian had given her as a bridal gift and set it down beside the veil.

""The cake will not be cut tonight, Julian,"" Maya whispered.

She turned her back on the dais, lifted the hem of her silk gown, and walked down the central aisle toward the grand double doors of the estate.
