Chapter 6 - The Blackout Sequence

The sudden plunge into darkness was absolute, broken only by the intricate, pale-blue glyphs glowing on the leather-bound ledger and the faint, silvery lattice spreading across the back of little Lily’s neck. The hum from Evelyn’s diagnostics pad died instantly, replaced by an ominous, low-frequency thrum that seemed to vibrate directly inside our skulls.

"Emergency backup generators should have kicked in within three milliseconds," I said, my voice tight as I reached out blindly in the dark, my hand brushing against the cold mahogany of the dining table. "Why didn't the grid transfer?"

"Because the grid isn't failing, Thomas—it’s being redirected," Evelyn’s voice cut through the dark, remarkably calm, coming from somewhere near the head of the table. "Someone on the outside isn't just listening; they’ve initiated a hardwire tap into the estate’s primary subterranean junction."

"The bunker," Arthur muttered, his voice strained and breathless. I heard the sharp rustle of his tuxedo fabric as he moved abruptly. "If they reach the primary terminal before we flush the cache, the entire regional network will synchronize with Lily’s neural signature."

"What happens if they synchronize?" Eleanor asked, her voice dropping to a terrifying whisper. The fear in her tone was gone, replaced by a cold, numbing resignation.

"Every human being within a fifty-mile radius with the Vane ancestral marker will experience a complete cognitive override," Evelyn stated bluntly. "In simpler terms, Ellie? They become remote biological extensions of the board’s central mainframe."

"Not on my watch," Arthur snapped. A sudden, sharp click echoed in the dark, followed by the blinding beam of a tactical flashlight illuminating the room in harsh, stark white.

Arthur stood beside the open wall safe, holding a heavy-duty military-grade flare and a steel-barreled emergency pistol. The harsh light caught the sweat running down his forehead and the grim determination set in his jaw.

"Evelyn, take the girl through the service elevator behind the pantry," Arthur ordered, tossing a set of master keys across the table. "Thomas, you’re with me. We’re heading down to the sub-level to manually sever the trunk lines."

"We aren't going anywhere," a cold, metallic voice crackled from the ceiling intercom, interrupting Arthur before he could move. The estate’s emergency PA system had reactivated on its own. "The primary custodian credentials have been accepted. Dr. Vance, Mr. Vane... the board extends its deepest gratitude for your cooperation. The extraction team is already in the foyer."

We all froze, listening intently as heavy, synchronized boots began marching in unison across the hardwood floor of the grand hallway just outside the dining room doors.
