Chapter 1 - The First Fracture

The heavy silence of the Vane estate dining room shattered into frantic whispers the moment the green liquid hit the white marble. Six-year-old Lily stood frozen in her stiff white dress, her small hand still hovering in the air after knocking over the crystal goblet. The fluorescent chartreuse fluid hissed softly against the polished stone, emitting an acrid, chemical scent that immediately burned the back of everyone's throat.

"Oops," Lily murmured, her blue eyes wide and innocent, entirely unaware of the terror she had just unleashed upon the household.

"Lily, step back right now!" Eleanor slammed her silver-forked hand down onto the mahogany table, her pearl necklace trembling against the high collar of her elegant silver dress. Her eyes were wide, bloodshot, and locked onto the bubbling pool with a visceral, suffocating panic. "Don't you dare look at it, don't you dare touch it!"

Grandfather Arthur didn't look up at the child. His seventy-year-old face had gone completely gray under the warm chandelier light. His knuckles, gripping the edge of his black tuxedo jacket, were stark white. His gaze remained glued downward, illuminated by the cold, sickly blue light emanating from the screen of his high-end smartphone. A single bead of sweat traced a slow path down his deeply lined temple.

"Look at this," Arthur whispered, his voice cracking with a terrifying fragility that none of us had ever heard in the patriarch before. He turned the phone slightly toward the center of the table, though the screen remained half-shadowed by the centerpiece. "It’s not just here. It’s happening across every node in the eastern seaboard."

"Arthur, put the phone down and listen to me!" Eleanor stood up so violently her chair scraped harshly against the hardwood floor. "We have to clear the house. We have to leave this room, this floor, this entire zip code right now before anyone realizes what was delivered in that consignment!"

"Leave?" Arthur let out a dry, humorless chuckle that sounded like dry leaves scraping across pavement. "With what car, Eleanor? Look out the reinforced glass. The perimeter sensors aren't offline because of a storm. They're locked down."

I stared between the two of them, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird. "What is on that phone, Grandpa? What did Lily spill?"

Eleanor whipped her head toward me, her face contorted in furious desperation. "Nobody touch that," she hissed, her voice dropping to a venomous whisper that silenced the room completely.

Arthur’s phone screen suddenly went pitch black, followed instantly by the automated voice of the house security system announcing a complete override from an unknown external source.
