Chapter 13 - The Genesis Override

The blood-red warning text pulsed rhythmically across the massive overhead screens, casting an ominous crimson glow over the entire subterranean chamber. The low hum of the server racks deepened into a roaring vibration that made the concrete floor beneath our feet tremble.
"Can you cancel the transfer?" I demanded, grabbing Evelyn by the shoulder as I stared at the holographic map, where thousands of green nodes were rapidly shifting from green to a solid, unyielding crimson.
"I can't cancel it," Evelyn said, her voice eerily calm as her fingers continued a blur of motion across the holographic interface. "The transfer protocol was hardcoded into the genesis architecture thirty years ago by the board. Once the primary biometric subject—Lily—was exposed to the catalyst, the system became fully autonomous."
"Then we destroy the servers," Eleanor said coldly, standing up from where she sat beside the sleeping child. She picked up a heavy iron maintenance wrench resting against the base of the console, her eyes fixed on the towering banks of quantum hardware. "If we smash the core processors, the network dies with it."
"If you smash those processors, Ellie, Lily dies with them," Evelyn corrected sharply, stopping Eleanor with a single, devastating sentence. The wrench slipped from Eleanor’s fingers, clattering loudly against the concrete floor. "Her neural matrix is currently mapped directly to the primary storage banks. Any physical disruption to the hardware will result in an immediate, catastrophic feedback loop through her central nervous system."
I felt the room spin. "So we're trapped. Either the board takes over every Vane descendant on the continent, or our niece's brain gets fried."
"Not necessarily," a familiar, gravely voice echoed from the shadowed entrance behind us.
We all whirled around. Emerging from the maintenance tunnel adjacent to the main bulkhead was Arthur, his tuxedo jacket torn and stained with soot, his right arm clutched tightly to his side, dripping dark blood onto the concrete floor.
"Grandpa!" I yelled, rushing forward to help him stumble the final few steps toward the console.
"Arthur, you're bleeding!" Eleanor gasped, rushing to his other side to support his weight as they reached the illuminated platform.
"The operatives got a shot off as I sealed the upper service shaft," Arthur managed a weak, grim smile, his face pale and drawn. He leaned heavily against the edge of the console, reaching into his inner pocket to pull out a small, archaic-looking magnetic tape cartridge. "They didn't get the master sequence, though. I kept the analog failsafe."
Evelyn stared at the cartridge in utter disbelief. "You kept the original magnetic purge code? I thought we destroyed that in ninety-eight."
May you like
"I never trust a digital footprint," Arthur wheezed, sliding the cartridge into a dusty, obsolete slot hidden beneath the modern holographic interface. "If the network wants our bloodline, it’s going to have to swallow a very old pill."
