Chapter 8

The following morning, Clara sat across from Arthur Pendelton in his private office, the heavy mahogany door locked securely from the inside. She slid Victoria’s documents across his desk. Arthur put on his glasses, scanned the first page, and slowly lowered his hands, his face turning grave.

"Where did you get these?" Arthur asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

"Victoria Sloane brought them to my apartment last night," Clara replied, leaning back in her leather chair. "She’s terrified of Richard. She claims he’s using Sterling’s shipping routes for money laundering and illicit cargo."

Arthur rubbed his chin, deep in thought. "This changes everything, Clara. If federal agencies get wind of this before we clean house, they could slap a freezing injunction on our entire fleet. Our cargo ships would be impounded globally."

"Which is why we cannot let the feds stumble into this blindly," Clara said firmly. "We need to beat Richard to the punch. We need to audit our own logistics division independently, quietly, and immediately, before he realizes Victoria gave us the playbook."

"That requires access to the secure server room at the main port terminal," Arthur noted. "And Richard still has sympathizers stationed inside port security from the days when Thomas Vance ran the oversight committee."

"Then we bypass port security," Clara said with quiet resolve. "My father kept a private analog terminal in the old maintenance vault beneath Pier 42. It operates on an independent closed-loop network that isn't tied to the main corporate grid or the port authority's servers."

Arthur looked at her with a mixture of admiration and concern. "Clara, going down to the port docks unannounced at night is risky. Richard’s associates aren’t just corporate suits; they’re ruthless fixers who won't hesitate to protect their operations."

"My father built that empire, Arthur. Every pier, every warehouse, every container ship carries the Sterling name," Clara said, standing up and buttoning her blazer. "I am not hiding behind lawyers while someone tries to tear my family's legacy apart. Tonight, we go down to Pier 42."

The autumn afternoon faded quickly into a cold, damp dusk as Clara prepared for her covert mission. She discarded her designer suits for dark denim, heavy boots, and a weathered canvas utility jacket that had belonged to her father. She tied her dark hair back into a tight, practical braid. As she looked at her reflection in the mirror, the tear-stained woman in the white silk dress felt like a distant, fragile stranger. The woman staring back now was battle-tested, focused, and ready for war.
