Chapter 12

Rain poured down in sheets, soaking Clara to the skin as she sprinted through the labyrinth of towering shipping containers. Behind her, heavy boots splashed through puddles, accompanied by angry shouts. Her lungs burned with the cold night air, and her boots slipped slightly on the slick asphalt, but adrenaline fueled every stride. She knew the layout of the yard better than they did; she used the narrow gaps between stacked containers where larger men could barely squeeze, cutting corners and losing her pursuers in the maze of steel shadows.
She burst through the rusted service gate into the alleyway where Arthur Pendelton’s car was idling. She yanked the rear door open and threw herself inside, slamming it shut behind her.
"Drive! Go, now!" Clara gasped, catching her breath as water dripped from her hair onto her jacket.
Arthur didn’t hesitate. He slammed the sedan into drive, peeling away from the curb just as the two enforcers rounded the corner of the alley, flashing their heavy lights in vain as the car disappeared into the rainy Manhattan traffic.
Minutes later, safely inside Arthur’s secure midtown office, Clara placed the small encrypted flash drive onto the mahogany desk.
"Did you get it?" Arthur asked anxiously, handing her a dry towel and a cup of hot black coffee.
"Everything," Clara said, her voice steady despite her exhaustion. She wrapped the towel around her shoulders and took a grateful sip of the coffee. "Shipping manifests, wire transfers, money laundering ledgers, and the direct link to Richard Vance’s offshore accounts. It’s all here."
Arthur plugged the drive into a secure, offline laptop on his desk. Within moments, the verified files displayed across the high-resolution screen. He scrolled through the data, his eyes widening with every click.
"This isn't just corporate fraud, Clara," Arthur said, his voice grave. "This is a federal RICO case. If we hand this directly to the FBI’s white-collar and organized crime divisions, Richard Vance and his entire syndicate will be facing decades behind bars."

"Then let's not wait for morning," Clara said, standing up, her fatigue completely replaced by an unyielding surge of justice. "Contact Director Vance—the federal prosecutor, not Richard's uncle—and tell her we have an airtight case ready for immediate execution."
Arthur nodded, picking up his encrypted desk phone. "It’s time to bring the house down."
