Chapter 7

Clara stood motionless for three agonizing seconds, her finger hovering over the intercom disconnect button. Every fiber of her being screamed that Victoria was spinning another elaborate web of manipulation, a desperate play by a cornered animal trying to save her own skin. Yet, the mention of Richard liquidating shell companies struck a nerve. If Richard was moving faster than anticipated, waiting for formal legal channels might give him enough time to hide the assets beyond recovery.
She reached out and pressed the master release switch. The heavy glass doors clicked open, sliding apart with a soft mechanical hiss.
Victoria practically stumbled into the entryway, her breathing ragged. She clutched a worn leather portfolio tightly to her chest as if it were a shield. Her makeup was smudged beneath her eyes, and the arrogant edge that had defined her personality on the yacht was completely gone, replaced by a raw, trembling terror.
"Sit," Clara instructed, pointing toward a minimalist velvet armchair by the window. She remained standing, keeping a safe distance, her arms crossed defensively over her chest. "And you have exactly three minutes to convince me why I shouldn't call the police right now."
Victoria dropped heavily into the chair, her hands shaking so violently she could barely open the portfolio. She pulled out a stack of printed email threads and bank wire confirmations, sliding them across the glass coffee table toward Clara.
"Marcus didn't just embezzle funds from Sterling," Victoria whispered, casting a nervous glance toward the windows as if expecting someone to be watching from the street below. "He used company capital to finance a private acquisition network controlled by Richard. They weren't just trying to bankrupt the company—they were laundering money through international shipping fronts tied to illicit contraband."
Clara’s breath caught in her throat. Embezzlement and corporate espionage were civil and criminal matters she was fully prepared to fight in court. But international money laundering involving illicit contraband crossed a terrifying line that could drag Sterling Global Maritime down into a federal criminal indictment from which it might never recover.
"If this is true," Clara said slowly, her voice dropping to an icy register, "why are you handing this to me? You were knee-deep in the marketing side of these shell companies."

"Because Richard threatened to tie me to the trafficking accounts and make me take the full federal fall," Victoria sobbed, finally breaking down into real, shuddering tears. "He told me last night that if I opened my mouth, I’d end up at the bottom of the Hudson. I helped them, Clara, yes, but I was just a pawn. Richard is the one pulling every string."
Clara looked down at the documents. The signatures, the routing codes, and the encrypted communication logs were undeniable. She realized with a sickening clarity that the betrayal ran far deeper and darker than she had ever imagined.
