Chapter 6

The afternoon sun cast long amber rays across the polished hardwood floors of Clara’s penthouse apartment. Unlike the sterile corporate environment of Sterling Tower, her home was filled with memories—soft cashmere throws, framed black-and-white photographs of her travels with her father, and the lingering scent of sandalwood and jasmine. Yet, tonight, the spacious rooms felt hollow, haunted by the ghost of a marriage that had proved to be a meticulously constructed lie.

Clara poured a cup of herbal tea in the kitchen, her movements mechanical. She stared down at the polished granite counter, replaying the past three years in her mind. How had she missed the signs? Marcus had always been charming, attentive, and seemingly devoted to her career. But looking back, his affection had been nothing more than a carefully rehearsed performance, designed to lull her into a false sense of security while he systematically gained access to her father’s private ledgers.

A sharp chime at the private elevator foyer broke her reverie. Clara froze, her hand tightening around the porcelain teacup. Security protocol dictated that no one could access her floor without prior authorization or her personal keycard override. She walked cautiously out of the kitchen, setting the cup down on a side table, and approached the frosted glass double doors of the foyer.

Through the narrow slit of the security camera monitor, she saw a figure standing in the dimly lit hallway. It was not a delivery courier or a building manager. It was Victoria Sloane.

Victoria no longer looked like the untouchable, smug woman who had stood on the yacht holding the ruby brooch. Her designer coat was rumpled, her hair was disheveled, and her face was pale and drawn under the harsh fluorescent lights of the hallway. She was pressing the call button repeatedly, her movements frantic and erratic.

Clara pressed the intercom panel. "You have no business here, Victoria. If you don't leave this building right now, I will have building security remove you the same way the marshals removed you from the yacht."

"Open the door, Clara," Victoria pleaded, her voice cracking with genuine panic. "I need to talk to you. You don't understand what you've gotten yourself into. Richard isn't just some disgruntled corporate competitor. He’s dangerous."

Clara stared at the monitor, her expression cold. "You made your bed with Richard. Now you can lie in it."

"He’s going to pin everything on me!" Victoria cried, her composure completely shattering. "Marcus took off with the offshore accounts, and Richard is already liquidating the shell companies. I’m the scapegoat, Clara! Please, just give me five minutes. I have documents that can destroy him—and save you."
