Chapter 14

The sun descended slowly behind the rolling hills surrounding the Vane estate, painting the western sky in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and deep rose. The heavy oak doors of the grand hall stood wide open, welcoming the gentle evening breeze through the marble corridors where Eleanor’s angry shouts had once echoed with such cruelty.

A small, intimate dinner was prepared in the formal dining room—the first time the family table had been set for true heirs in ten years. The mahogany surface was polished to a mirror finish, reflecting the warm glow of silver candelabras and crystal stemware.

Clara sat at the head of the long table, dressed in a soft ivory dress with delicate lace collars, looking every bit the young noblewoman she was meant to be. Julian sat beside her, serving her a portion of roasted fowl with a warm, encouraging smile. The silent tension that had defined their childhoods had completely evaporated, replaced by the easy, comfortable laughter of siblings rediscovering a shared history.

“Do you remember our parents at all?” Clara asked softly, pausing with her fork halfway to her plate as she looked at the large oil portrait of the late Duke and Duchess hanging prominently above the mantelpiece.

“I remember our mother’s piano playing,” Julian replied, his gaze drifting up to the canvas where their parents smiled down from a timeless, golden era. “She used to play a specific waltz every evening just before sunset. You loved to dance around her skirts, even when you could barely walk on your own two feet.”

Clara smiled, closing her eyes for a brief moment as if she could hear the faint, lingering notes of a forgotten melody echoing through the vaulted ceiling. “I think I remember that, too. Not in my head, but somewhere deep inside my heart.”

“They would be proud of you, Clara,” Julian said, covering her small hand with his own. “You survived the worst of what the world had to offer, and you did it with your kindness entirely intact.”

As the last rays of twilight faded from the horizon, the estate settled into a profound, peaceful silence. There were no ghosts left in the hallways, no threats lurking behind closed doors. The trauma of the past had been brought to light and swept away by justice and truth.
