Chapter 1

The marble floor of the grand hall echoed with the sharp, merciless cadence of Countess Eleanor’s voice. Her red strapless gown shimmered under the crystal chandeliers, a pool of violent crimson contrasting with the immaculate white stone. Standing over the trembling child, she pointed a manicured finger toward the massive oak doors.
“Fuera con esta basura! Aquí solo brilla el oro!” Eleanor’s command slashed through the vaulted ceiling, carrying the cold weight of aristocratic disdain.
On her knees, young Clara gasped for air through racking sobs. Her simple dress was frayed and stained with coal dust, smudging her tear-streaked cheeks. Around her, a shattered necklace lay in ruins. Scores of glossy white pearls rolled across the polished expanse, seeking dark corners. With frantic, bleeding fingers, Clara scrambled across the freezing stone, trying to gather the rolling spheres before they vanished forever. Each pearl was precious, not merely for its material worth, but because it was the sole remaining anchor to her forgotten past.
Julian, clad in a sharp bright blue suit and a black silk shirt, surged forward from the shadows of the gallery. The raw cruelty of the scene struck him like a physical blow. He dropped to his knees beside the weeping girl, the fine fabric of his trousers brushing the grit of the floor. His heart hammered against his ribs as he watched her desperate struggle.
Without thinking, Julian reached down and scooped up a single pearl resting near his leather shoe. He lifted it toward the amber light of the chandelier to inspect it. As the illumination hit the smooth, iridescent surface, a microscopic indentation caught his eye. With a sinking breath, he traced the tiny, perfectly engraved royal crest etched into the nacre—the exact sigil of the long-lost House of Vane, a family decimated by a palace fire a decade ago.

Julian’s breath hitched. He slowly raised his wide, disbelieving eyes from the tiny sphere to the bruised, terrified face of the little girl. A profound, terrifying realization gripped his chest. He looked at Clara through a veil of sudden tears and whispered the words that would dismantle his entire world.
“¿Es mi hermana?”
