Chapter 13

The transition of power at the Vane estate occurred swiftly under the watchful supervision of the High Court. Within a week, the heavy, oppressive atmosphere that had choked the halls for a decade was systematically dismantled. The dark draperies were pulled down to let the unfiltered sunlight flood the grand rooms, and the staff—once cowed by Eleanor’s tyranny—were offered fair contracts, back pay, and formal apologies on behalf of the estate.

Julian assumed his rightful role as temporary administrator of the household, working tirelessly alongside legal teams to audit the accounts and restore the properties that Eleanor had neglected or mortgaged. The bright blue suit he had worn on the night of discovery now hung in his restored dressing room, a reminder of the exact moment their lives had pivoted from darkness into the light.

Clara’s life underwent an even more profound transformation. The damp, narrow alcove beneath the stairs was permanently sealed off, converted into a memorial storage space for the estate's dark history, while a sunlit, spacious chamber on the second floor with large bay windows overlooking the rose gardens was prepared for her. Tailors from the capital arrived with bolts of fine velvet, silk, and cotton, measuring her for dresses that fit a child of royal lineage rather than rags fit for a scullery.

Yet, despite the sudden influx of luxury, Clara remained grounded, carrying the wooden bird carved by an unknown hand in the cellars wherever she went.

One afternoon, Julian found her sitting on the stone balustrade of the terrace, quietly polishing the small, glossy white pearls she had gathered from the marble floor on that fateful night. The tiny royal crests engraved on each sphere caught the golden afternoon light, sparkling like tiny stars against her palm.

“Are you still keeping those?” Julian asked gently, walking out onto the terrace and leaning against the stone railing beside her.

Clara looked up, offering a soft, genuine smile that reached her hazel eyes. “They remind me of where I came from,” she said quietly. “And they remind me of the moment you found me in the dark.”

Julian wrapped a warm woolen shawl around her shoulders, feeling a deep, protective pride swell in his chest. “We will never go back to the dark, Clara. The past is behind us now.”
