Chapter 9 - The Federal Warrant

The rhythmic pounding against the hidden ceiling hatch grew louder, accompanied by the muffled shouting of Jonathan Vance and the heavy, unmistakable boots of federal agents storming the upper levels of the mansion. The fragile illusion of untouchable power that Arthur Vance had cultivated for decades began to fracture under the weight of incoming law enforcement.

Arthur stood motionless by his desk, the amber light from a single surviving tactical flashlight catching the pale, weathered lines of his face. He looked at Marcus, whose hand was still pressed against his bruised ribs, and then down at the ruined electrical panel.

“Open the backup generator, Marcus,” Arthur commanded, his voice unnaturally calm, masking a cold, calculating fury. “And let my brother in. If the marshals are already inside the house, playing hide-and-seek down here is no longer an option.”

Marcus nodded sharply, pressing a hidden sequence of buttons on the side of the mahogany desk. A low, mechanical hum vibrated through the floorboards as emergency backup lights flickered on overhead, casting a harsh, clinical white glow across the ruined vault.

With a loud pneumatic hiss, the ceiling hatch above them unlatched and swung downward. Jonathan Vance dropped through the opening, landing awkwardly on the tiled floor. His expensive black tuxedo was wrinkled, his hair disheveled, and his eyes wild with panic.

“Arthur, they’re everywhere!” Jonathan gasped, gripping his older brother by the lapels of his shirt. “The SEC, the FBI, federal marshals—they have a warrant signed by a federal judge. They’re seizing every asset, every server, every offshore account we control!”

Arthur coldly removed Jonathan’s hands from his chest, smoothing down his shirt with deliberate slowness. “Calm down, Jonathan. A warrant is just a piece of paper until it’s executed. Where is the head of compliance?”

“He’s cooperating with them, Arthur!” Jonathan cried, looking around the room and finally noticing Chloe and David huddled in the corner near the shattered display cabinets. Jonathan’s face drained of color. “What are they doing here? Why didn't you dispose of them before the gala?”

Chloe slowly stood up, pulling David to his feet beside her. She smoothed down the front of her white off-shoulder gown, ignoring the dust and tiny glass shards clinging to the fabric. She looked directly at Jonathan, a triumphant, icy smile playing on her lips.

“Because,” Chloe said clearly, her voice echoing off the stone walls, “some sins are too heavy to bury, even for a Vance.”

Before Jonathan could respond, heavy, disciplined footsteps echoed down the spiral iron staircase behind them. A towering figure in a dark federal windbreaker stepped into the vault, holding a drawn sidearm and followed by three armed marshals.

“Arthur Vance,” the federal agent announced, his voice booming with authority as he raised a blue warrant folder. “You are under arrest for corporate fraud, money laundering, and obstruction of justice. Step away from the desk with your hands where we can see them.”
