Chapter 10 - The Patriarch’s Gamble

The federal agent’s voice hung heavy and absolute in the sterile air of the underground vault. The three armed marshals fanned out instantly, securing the perimeter, their weapons trained squarely on Arthur, Jonathan, and Marcus. The iron grip of the Vance family’s decades-long corruption seemed to shatter in an instant.

Arthur Vance didn't flinch. He didn't raise his hands, nor did he look panicked. Instead, he let out a slow, gravelly sigh, adjusted his cuffs once more, and reached deliberately into the inner pocket of his black shirt.

“Agent,” Arthur said, his voice entirely devoid of fear, carrying an eerie, chilling composure. “Before you read me my rights, you might want to look at the second page of that warrant.”

The lead federal agent narrowed his eyes, keeping his service weapon leveled at Arthur’s chest. “Don't make any sudden movements, Vance. Hands on the desk, now.”

“Look at the jurisdiction clause, agent,” Arthur insisted smoothly, tilting his head toward the blue folder in the man's hand. “You have a state-level financial crimes warrant issued by a local magistrate. But this property operates under a federal maritime exemption established by an act of Congress in nineteen-forty-two, ratified specifically for this estate's private docks.”

Jonathan gasped, a glimmer of desperate hope flashing in his frantic eyes. “He’s right! The docks... the property lines extend past the municipal zone!”

Chloe’s heart skipped a beat. She stepped forward from the shadow of the mahogany desk, her eyes wide with disbelief. “Don't listen to him! It’s a loophole he bought twenty years ago to cover up illegal shipping operations!”

The federal agent hesitated for a fraction of a second. He glanced down at the blue folder, his eyes scanning the dense legal jargon printed at the bottom of the first page. That momentary hesitation was all Arthur needed.

With blinding speed, Arthur didn't reach for a weapon; he slammed his palm onto a brass toggle switch hidden beneath the lip of the mahogany desk.

A deafening pneumatic screech echoed through the vault. The massive steel door at the entrance didn't just unlock—it began to slide horizontally into the stone wall, revealing a dark, secondary tunnel leading directly down toward the water’s edge beneath the cliffs.

“Marcus, take Jonathan,” Arthur ordered sharply, stepping backward toward the open tunnel entrance. He cast one final, venomous glance back at Chloe and David. “This game isn't over yet, my dear. Not by a long shot.”

Marcus lunged forward, grabbing Jonathan by the arm and dragging him toward the dark tunnel just as the federal agent shouted an order to fire.
