Chapter 3 - The Sealed Envelope

The wax seal on the white envelope bore the distinct crest of the Vance family—a rampant stag surrounded by briars. Chloe stared at it, her fingers hovering inches away from the crimson emblem. The distant strains of a waltz drifted up through the floorboards, mocking the heavy silence that had fallen over the East Gallery. Marcus stood motionless, a towering sentinel waiting for her to make a move that would seal her fate.

“I don't play games with hired muscle, Marcus,” Chloe muttered, though her bravado felt hollow even to her own ears.

“This isn't a game,” Marcus replied, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. “Arthur isn't just a businessman, and this house isn't just a home. The people downstairs aren't celebrating a birthday or an anniversary. They are here for an auction, Chloe. And you are the premier lot.”

Chloe’s breath hitched. She ripped the wax seal open, unfolding a heavy cardstock note written in elegant, sloping cursive. Her eyes scanned the first few lines, and the color drained entirely from her face. It wasn't an invitation. It was a bill of sale, bearing her own social security number and a valuation that matched the exact debt her brother had accumulated before his mysterious disappearance last winter.

“This is impossible,” Chloe choked out, looking up at the security chief. “My brother settled his accounts. He paid them off.”

“In blood, perhaps,” Marcus said coldly. “Or in assets you didn't know he possessed. Arthur owns every contract in this city, Chloe. When you walked through those front doors tonight in that silver dress, you didn't crash a party. You walked back into a cage you escaped five years ago.”

Before Chloe could demand answers, a sharp click echoed from the far end of the gallery. A hidden panel in the wood-paneled wall slid open, revealing a narrow spiral staircase descending into absolute darkness. A faint smell of ozone and old paper drifted up from the subterranean depths.

“Go down,” Marcus ordered, gesturing toward the open void with a nod of his chin. “Arthur is waiting in the vault. And if you try to run, the police waiting at the front gates will find those stolen diamonds in your dressing room before you reach your car.”

Chloe looked from the dark staircase back to the security chief, realizing with sudden, crushing clarity that she had walked into a trap meticulously laid out months in advance. She clutched the incriminating document to her chest, took a deep, trembling breath, and stepped across the threshold into the dark stairwell.
