Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Gallery

The heavy mahogany doors of the East Gallery muffled the distant sounds of the celebration, but the chill in the air remained entirely uncomfortably real. Chloe pressed her back against the cool wood of the gallery wall, her chest still rising and falling rapidly from the public humiliation on the grand staircase. The dangling diamond earrings she wore caught the pale moonlight filtering through the arched stained-glass windows, casting shimmering geometric patterns across the priceless oil paintings that lined the long hallway.

She pulled the folded document out from the secret lining of her silver gown, uncrumpling the heavy parchment with trembling fingers. The ink was old, but the signature at the bottom was unmistakably that of Arthur Vance, dated twenty-five years ago. It detailed a transfer of ownership, a hidden trust, and a beneficiary whose name had been violently scratched out with a heavy pen stroke.

“Looking for something that isn't yours?”

Chloe gasped, dropping the document against her skirt as she spun around. Standing at the entrance of the dark gallery, blocking the only exit, was Marcus, Arthur’s silent and perpetually watchful head of security. His broad shoulders filled the arched doorway, and his dark eyes were fixed on the silver paper clutched in her hand.

“I was just admiring the art, Marcus,” Chloe said, desperately trying to steady her voice and inject a veneer of casual confidence into her tone.

Marcus took two deliberate steps forward, his polished oxblood shoes clicking rhythmically against the hardwood floor. He didn't smile; he rarely did. Instead, he reached into his breast pocket and withdrew a small, pristine white envelope, identical to the ones placed on the dining tables downstairs for the midnight auction.

“Arthur doesn't like uninvited guests poking around the family archives,” Marcus said, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that sent a shiver down Chloe’s spine. “Especially guests who wear stolen jewelry.”

Chloe’s blood ran cold. The diamond earrings she wore weren't just expensive fashion statements; they were cataloged police evidence from a high-profile jewel heist in Manhattan three years ago—a heist that Chloe was supposed to have taken the fall for.

“How do you know about these?” Chloe whispered, stepping back until the edge of a heavy oak display case dug painfully into her lower spine.

Marcus stepped within arm’s reach, his imposing frame casting a deep shadow over her. He slowly extended the white envelope toward her chest, his gaze never leaving her terrified eyes.

“Open it,” Marcus instructed quietly. “And find out who really put your name on the guest list tonight.”
