Chapter 7 - The Hidden Compartment

The massive iron doors of the estate library swung open with a heavy, oiled groan. Inside, the room smelled of aged leather, pipe tobacco, and centuries of accumulated secrets. Special Agent Miller swept her flashlight beam across the towering mahogany bookshelves, the bright circle of light dancing over rare first editions and heavy velvet drapery.
Mark stood near the doorway, keeping a protective hand on Lily’s shoulder, while the little girl in the cream-colored party dress pointed unerringly toward a massive mahogany desk situated beneath a large oil painting of a stern-faced ancestor.
"Right there," Lily said, her voice echoing softly in the cavernous room. "Press the third carved scroll on the left side of the desk base."
Agent Miller knelt down, running her fingers along the intricately carved woodwork until her thumb found the designated wooden scroll. She pressed inward. With a faint, pneumatic hiss, a hidden panel beneath the desk slid open, revealing a small, velvet-lined compartment that had clearly remained undisturbed for decades.
Inside the compartment sat a heavy, brass-bound ledger with cracked leather binding, alongside a small, analog audio cassette tape labeled in neat, hurried handwriting: Project Janus - Final Fail-Safe.
Miller carefully lifted the cassette tape out, holding it up to the flashlight beam. "Project Janus," she murmured, reading the label aloud. "Mark, do you know what this refers to?"
Mark stepped closer, his brow furrowing as he stared at the handwriting. "Janus. The two-faced Roman god of beginnings, gates, transitions, and duality. Thomas used that name for his private shell company—the one he used to acquire the land titles after pushing out the original homesteaders."
Lily let go of Mark's hand and walked over to the open compartment, reaching inside to pull out a single, folded sheet of paper resting beneath the ledger. She unfolded it carefully, her small fingers treating the brittle document with extreme care.
"This isn't just about land, Uncle Mark," Lily whispered, her eyes scanning the dense columns of typewritten text. "This is the deed transfer for the orphanage where my mother grew up. Grandfather didn't buy it legally. He foreclosed on it using forged signatures right before the fire in nineteen-ninety-eight."
Agent Miller snatched the paper gently from Lily's hands, her eyes scanning the faded ink with mounting horror. "My God," she breathed. "Clara’s childhood home. The fire wasn't an accident either. It was an insurance payout."
Mark let out a long, slow breath, running a hand through his hair. "The whole foundation of the Vance fortune was built on ash and stolen names. Thomas didn't just ruin your father, Lily. He built an entire empire on a foundation of calculated destruction."

Before Miller could respond, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the hidden compartment, followed by the faint hum of a miniature digital recording device embedded deep within the wooden wall behind the ledger.
