Chapter 1 - The First Petal of Betrayal

The sprawling ballroom hummed with the hollow chime of crystal flutes and polite, hollow laughter. Seven-year-old Lily stood frozen beneath the glittering chandelier, her cream-colored party dress catching the amber light. Her blonde braided hair was neatly tied, but her eyes held a chilling clarity. In her small hands, she held up a large peach-colored artificial peony flower with a green stem and leaves. She looked directly at her mother, Clara, who stood clad in a sparkling silver sequined evening gown with a plunging neckline, her dark hair pulled back into a severe twist.
Clara froze, her wineglass hovering inches from her crimson lips. Grandfather Thomas adjusted his dark suit jacket, stepping half an inch closer as if bracing for a physical blow. The air in the opulent room grew heavy, suffocatingly dense.
"Why did you give me trash?" Lily asked softly, her voice cutting through the ambient noise like a scalpel.
Clara’s breath hitched. She set her glass down with a sharp clink that made several nearby socialites turn their heads.
"Lily, darling, what are you holding?" Clara asked, her voice dangerously sweet, though a muscle twitched in her immaculate jawline. "Where did you find that hideous thing?"
"You know where," Lily replied, not flinching. Her small fingers traced the frayed edge of the synthetic silk petal. "You threw it in the incinerator behind the greenhouse this morning. You thought it burned up. But it didn't. It only melted on one side. Just like the truth about what happened to Daddy's study."
Thomas stepped forward, his face draining of color. "Enough of this nonsense, child. You are confused."
"I'm not confused at all, Grandfather," Lily whispered, her gaze shifting slowly to the older man. "I saw what you both buried under the roots of the grand oak tree."
Clara’s eyes flared with sudden, unadulterated panic. She dropped her polished mask in a fraction of a second. "Shut your mouth right now, you ungrateful little brat."
"Or what?" Lily tilted her head, a terrifyingly adult micro-expression crossing her young face. "Will you throw me in the fire too?"

Before Clara could lunge forward to grab her, the heavy mahogany ballroom doors swung open wide, and a tall, shadowy figure stepped into the brilliant light.
