Chapter 5 - Sirens in the Garden

The pulsing crimson and azure lights washed over the frightened faces of the elite guests, casting long, grotesque shadows across the marble floor. The distant, rhythmic thrum of police sirens grew deafeningly loud before cutting off abruptly, replaced by the heavy, authoritative slam of multiple car doors echoing from the courtyard.

Clara spun around, her dark hair completely coming undone as she grabbed Thomas’s arm with frantic desperation. "They're here! Thomas, what do we do? We have to get to the helipad on the roof. The pilot is on retainer—"

"Quiet, you idiot!" Thomas snarled, shaking her off with a violent jerk that sent her stumbling against a marble pillar. He smoothed the lapels of his dark suit jacket with trembling fingers, desperately trying to reclaim a shred of composure. "We stay calm. We claim this vagrant planted the evidence and manipulated the child. We have the best legal defense fund in the state."

Mark chuckled softly, stepping back toward the grand entrance as the heavy oak doors began to push inward. "Keep telling yourself that, Thomas. But the federal marshals aren't here for a simple trespassing complaint. They have a warrant signed by a judge who happens to have your offshore bank routing numbers on his desk."

Lily walked over to Mark, slipping her small hand into his rough, calloused palm. The contrast between the young girl in the elegant cream-colored party dress and the weathered man in the rumpled trench coat was stark, yet they moved with an eerie, synchronized purpose.

"You did a good job, Uncle Mark," Lily said softly, looking up at him with unblinking eyes.

"You did the hardest part, Lily," Mark replied, squeezing her small fingers.

The double doors swung completely open, revealing a phalanx of federal law enforcement officers in tactical gear, led by a tall woman with silver-streaked hair and a crisp federal badge pinned to her lapel. Behind them, the night air carried the sharp scent of damp earth and coming rain.

"Thomas Vance? Clara Vance?" the lead agent called out, her voice ringing clear and authoritative across the silent ballroom. "Step away from the guests and put your hands where we can see them."

Clara let out a choked shriek, dropping to her knees on the marble floor, her sparkling sequined gown pooling around her like shattered glass.

Thomas slowly raised his hands, his dark eyes locked onto Lily with a look of pure, unbridled malice. "You cursed little viper," he muttered under his breath. "We raised you. We gave you everything."

"No," Lily replied, her voice steady and cold. "You gave me trash. And now, you're going to burn with it."

As the federal agents swarmed forward, clicking handcuffs onto the aging patriarch and the weeping woman, the agent in charge knelt down to look at Lily. She noticed the large peach-colored artificial peony flower clutched tightly in the little girl's other hand.

"Child," the agent said gently, reaching out a hand. "Where did you get that?"
