Chapter 8: A Visit from the Past

The following evening, as twilight painted the sky in shades of bruised purple and grey, a sharp knock echoed at Emily’s front door. She paused from her work at the desk, where she was drafting an affidavit with Marcus’s help. The knock came again—authoritative and persistent. She walked slowly down the hallway, peering through the peephole. Standing on her porch was not a process server or a private investigator, but her aunt Martha—her father’s sister, who had always maintained a fragile neutrality in family dynamics.

Emily unlocked the door and pulled it open just enough to block the entryway. Martha stood there looking anxious, clutching a designer handbag to her chest like a shield. "May I come in, Emily? Please. It’s about your father." Emily hesitated for a moment before stepping aside to let her in, keeping her posture guarded. Martha walked into the modest living room, her eyes darting nervously around the sparse furnishings as if measuring the depth of Emily’s exile.

"Arthur is losing his mind," Martha whispered, sitting stiffly on the edge of the sofa without waiting for an invitation. "The board is in an uproar. Rumors of a federal investigation are already leaking through the financial press, and he’s blaming everyone around him. He sent me here, Emily. He wants to know what it will take to make this go away." Emily stood by the kitchen counter, folding her arms across her chest. "There is no 'making this go away,' Aunt Martha. What he did wasn't a mistake; it was a calculated fraud that destroyed my mother’s legacy."

"He’s your father," Martha pleaded, her voice cracking slightly with genuine distress. "If these charges go public, it will destroy the family name, ruin the company, and put an old man in federal prison. Is revenge really worth tearing everything apart?" Emily looked at her aunt with steady, unblinking green eyes. "I’m not looking for revenge, Martha. I’m looking for accountability. For forty-five years, my father ruled our family through fear and manipulation, hiding behind a facade of respectability. It’s time the truth came out, no matter who gets hurt in the process."

Martha fell silent, recognizing the absolute steel beneath her niece's calm exterior. She realized that pleading for family loyalty was useless against someone who had been systematically betrayed by that very concept. Rising slowly from the sofa, Martha walked toward the door with a heavy sigh. "He won't give up easily, Emily. He has too much to lose, and a cornered animal is capable of anything." With those parting words, she left into the night, leaving Emily alone with the rising storm.
