Chapter 10: The Confrontation at the Office

Driven by desperation and rage, Arthur Vance decided to bypass his lawyers and confront Emily directly. Late Friday afternoon, as Emily stepped out of a side entrance of the federal courthouse, a black town car pulled up sharply to the curb. The rear door flew open, and Arthur stepped out, looking older, paler, and visibly shaken, his tailored suit wrinkled from a sleepless week. He strode directly toward her before U.S. marshals stationed near the steps could intervene, his face flushed with suppressed fury.

"Emily, stop this madness right now!" Arthur barked, his voice carrying across the busy sidewalk, drawing the curious stares of passersby. Emily stopped in her tracks, turning to face him with complete composure. She did not flinch, nor did she step back. She simply looked at him with the quiet, restrained detachment of a stranger observing a stranger. "There is no madness here, Dad. Just the law catching up with reality."

"You are destroying everything I spent forty years building!" Arthur hissed, stepping closer, his voice trembling with a mixture of disbelief and wounded pride. "Over a misunderstanding about accounting practices? I gave you a home, an education, a life! Is this how you repay your father?" Emily’s green eyes narrowed slightly as she met his gaze, her voice dropping into a steady, chilling register. "You didn't give me a life, Dad. You stole my mother’s legacy, lied to my face for decades, and treated everyone around you like chess pieces in your game. The bills have come due."

Before Arthur could reply, two federal marshals stepped between them, placing a firm, authoritative hand on Arthur’s shoulder and warning him to maintain a safe distance from a federal witness. Arthur stumbled back, panting with rage, pointing a shaking finger at her as he retreated toward his town car. "You haven't won yet, Emily! I will fight you until my last breath and my last dollar!" Emily watched silently as the car doors slammed shut and the vehicle sped away into the downtown traffic. She knew his threats were hollow; the trap had already sprung shut.
