Chapter 5: The Corporate Counter-Strike
While Emily was meeting with federal prosecutors, Arthur Vance was locked in a high-stakes emergency conference call on the top floor of the Vance Tower downtown. Seated around the polished granite boardroom table were his chief legal counsel, a crisis PR manager, and the chief financial officer of Vance Enterprises. The atmosphere in the room was toxic with suppressed panic. Arthur paced behind his ergonomic leather chair, his face flushed with a mixture of humiliation and unbridled fury as he recounted the contents of the orange envelope.
"I want to know how she got those files," Arthur demanded, slamming his palm onto the table. "Those accounts were sealed under corporate restructuring agreements from five years ago. Only a handful of people had clearance to access those archives!" His lead attorney, a slick, expensive litigator named Richard Vance—no relation, despite the shared name—pushed his glasses up his nose and sighed heavily. "Arthur, screaming about how she got them won't stop the bleeding. If these documents are authentic, and based on what you’ve described, they are, we are looking at potential federal wire fraud and embezzlement charges."

The crisis manager, a sharp woman named Karen who specialized in burying corporate scandals before they hit the headlines, crossed her arms. "We need to control the narrative immediately. If Emily Vance goes public or approaches the authorities, we need to preempt her. We paint her as an unstable, estranged daughter fabricating baseless claims out of bitterness over her exclusion from the family trust. We attack her credibility before she has a chance to attack yours." Arthur stopped pacing, staring out the floor-to-ceiling window at the city skyline below. The idea of publicly dragging his own daughter through the mud gave him momentary pause, but his survival instinct quickly overrode any lingering paternal sentiment.
"Do whatever it takes," Arthur rasped, turning back to face his team. "Freeze any remaining personal accounts she might have access to. Audit her old consulting business for any historical discrepancies. If she wants to play hardball, we will crush her financially before she even reaches a courtroom." The lawyers nodded grimly, immediately setting to work on a coordinated counter-offensive designed to discredit Emily and protect the Vance legacy at all costs.
