Chapter 7: The Freeze

The notification arrived while Emily was still sitting with Marcus at the diner. Her banking app flashed a stark red warning banner across her phone screen: Account Access Restricted pending legal review. Arthur’s legal team had moved with terrifying speed, weaponizing the corporate bylaws to choke off her personal finances before the federal indictments could be formally unsealed. It was a classic intimidation tactic designed to induce panic, cut off her legal representation funds, and force her into a premature settlement.

Marcus leaned over the table, reading the alert over her shoulder, and cursed under his breath. "That’s illegal under the whistleblower protection clauses, but they’re betting they can bleed you dry in civil court before the feds step in." Emily stared at the glowing screen, feeling the cold reality of her father’s ruthlessness wash over her. She took a slow, deep breath, forcing her heart rate to steady. She had anticipated this exact maneuver. Before handing over the orange envelope, she had quietly transferred her liquid savings into an independent, unlinked account managed by a trusted family friend overseas.

"They think they’ve cut off my oxygen," Emily said quietly, locking her phone and sliding it back into her pocket. "They don't realize I planned for this contingency from day one." Marcus nodded with grim admiration. "Good. Because once they realize the freeze didn't break you, they’re going to escalate. Arthur doesn't know how to lose gracefully; when he’s cornered, he becomes dangerous." They parted ways shortly after, acutely aware that they were now operating under active surveillance by Vance Enterprises’ private security contractors.

As Emily drove back toward her rental home, a sleek black sedan pulled out from a side street and fell smoothly into place two car lengths behind her. She checked her rearview mirror, her jaw tightening as she recognized the tinted windows and anonymous plates. Instead of heading straight home, she took a detour through the winding industrial district, testing her tail. The sedan stayed right with her, a physical manifestation of her father’s relentless pursuit. Rather than feeling fear, Emily felt a cold, sharp clarity. The battle lines were drawn in the open now, and there was no turning back for either side.
