Chapter 9 - The Second Arrival

The sharp, insistent chime of the front doorbell echoed through the quiet hallways of the house, cutting through the heavy silence of the nursery like glass breaking on stone. Everyone froze. Vince’s enforcers tensed in the hallway, their hands instinctively moving toward their waistbands, while Arthur frowned, pulling out a pocket watch to check the time.
“Were we expecting another delegation, Vince?” Arthur asked, his voice dropping into a sharp, suspicious register.
“No,” Vince replied, his dark eyes narrowing as he stepped toward the doorway. “Our perimeter is entirely locked down. Nobody gets past the gates without a direct clearance code from my detail downstairs.”
Elena, still pinned against the hallway wall by the enforcers, began to hyperventilate. “It’s the police! I sent an automated distress ping from my phone right before you grabbed me!”
“Shut her up,” Vince snapped, gesturing to one of the guards, who promptly shoved a hand over Elena’s mouth to muffle her panic.
Marcus looked wildly around the nursery, his grip on infant Leo tightening until his knuckles turned white. The realization that their elaborate web of lies was collapsing under the weight of law enforcement was written all over his pale, stubbled face.
“Clara,” Marcus whispered urgently, taking a desperate step toward his wife. “If the police come up here, they’re going to find the forged documents, the offshore accounts, and the flash drives. They’ll arrest both of us for conspiracy and child endangerment. You have to help me hide the drives.”
Clara looked at the man she had loved for seven years, feeling nothing except a bottomless, freezing void. She didn't flinch away from him, but she didn't offer a single finger of assistance either.
“You dug this grave, Marcus,” Clara said, her voice entirely devoid of emotion. “Lie in it.”
Downstairs, heavy boots stomped across the hardwood foyer, followed by a booming, authoritative voice echoing up the stairwell. “Police department! Open up! We received a silent distress call regarding an abduction in progress!”
Arthur didn't panic. The elderly man calmly snapped his manila folder shut and slipped a small, encrypted flash drive out of the scanner, pocketing it smoothly inside his tweed vest. He looked at Vince with a subtle nod.
“Let them up,” Arthur instructed quietly. “It’s time to let the official authorities untangle the mess Marcus created, though I suspect the federal indictment will be far less merciful than what we had planned.”
Vince gestured to his enforcers in the hallway. The guards immediately released Elena, who slumped against the pastel yellow wall in a weeping heap, and stepped back to clear the staircase landing just as two uniformed police officers rounded the corner into the second-floor hallway with their handguns drawn.
“Drop your weapons! Hands where we can see them!” the lead officer shouted, his flashlight beam sweeping violently across the nursery and blinding everyone in the room.
May you like
The bright beam hit Marcus squarely in the eyes, forcing him to shield infant Leo with his body. In that blinding flash of light, Marcus made a split-second, disastrous decision. Instead of raising his hands, he spun around toward the open window behind the crib.
