Chapter 3 - The Forged Signature

The nursery air grew suffocatingly thin as the crisp edges of the birth certificate trembled in Clara’s hand. Marcus stared at the paper, his athletic frame visibly rigidifying beneath his grey t-shirt. All the color drained from his face, leaving his dark stubble looking like charcoal dust smeared across pale skin. He gently shifted infant Leo from one arm to the other, buying himself precious seconds to formulate a defense that no longer existed.
“Where did you find that?” Marcus whispered, his voice dangerously low, entirely stripped of its earlier defensive bluster.
“It doesn't matter where I found it, Marcus. It matters that it exists,” Clara replied, her tone terrifyingly calm compared to the screaming fury of moments before. She took a step toward him, forcing him to back up against the large wooden wardrobe. “You forged a relinquishment document. You signed away custody of a child to a woman who isn't even a blood relative, using a false notary seal. Why? Why would you give away our baby?”
Elena nervously bit her lower lip, glancing anxiously between Marcus and the door as if calculating her chances of sprinting down the hallway. “Marcus, you promised me you handled the legal hurdles. You said she wouldn't find out until the adoption was finalized in another jurisdiction. This is a disaster.”
Marcus shot Elena a murderous glare that silenced her instantly. He turned his attention back to Clara, his dark eyes shimmering with unshed tears that he refused to let fall. The facade was completely shattered; the loving husband act was dead on the hardwood floor.
“I didn't give him away to a stranger, Clara,” Marcus said, his voice cracking with a heavy, wretched emotion. “I gave him to safety. I gave him a future away from what is coming.”
Clara stopped in her tracks, a cold dread pooling in her stomach. “What are you talking about? What is coming?”
“You don't understand the people I owe money to,” Marcus muttered, looking away in deep shame. “My business debts weren't just bank loans, Clara. I borrowed from places that don't send collection agencies. They send enforcers. When they realized I couldn't pay, they demanded collateral. They wanted everything we owned, and when that wasn't enough, they targeted the baby.”
Elena nodded frantically, stepping forward to corroborate his desperate confession. “It’s true, Clara! Marcus made a deal behind your back to save all of us. If we didn't hand Leo over to my sister in Canada through a quiet, off-the-books adoption, those men were going to snatch him straight out of this crib to settle the ledger. We did it to protect him!”
Clara stared at them both, her mind reeling as the horrific pieces violently clicked into place. But before she could process the sheer scale of their betrayal, a heavy, rhythmic thud echoed from the front porch downstairs.

Three slow, deliberate knocks shook the front door, followed by the unmistakable sound of a heavy key turning smoothly in the front lock.
