Chapter 14 - The Final Bargain

The confession hung in the tense air of the home office like a physical weight. Clara stood over Elena, the heavy metal stapler still gripped tightly in her hand, her chest heaving as she processed the desperate, tear-stained face looking up at her.
“Your daughter?” Clara repeated, her voice dripping with skepticism. “You expect me to believe you’re just another victim in Arthur’s sick game?”
“It’s the truth, Clara! I swear to God!” Elena sobbed, pressing her forehead against the polished floorboards. “When Marcus stumbled into the syndicate’s offshore accounts, Arthur didn't just target him—they needed someone close to you to monitor the baby’s schedule and forge the relinquishment papers. They found out about my custody battle, kidnapped my little Maya from her after-school program, and told me that if I didn't play my part as the friendly neighbor, I would never see her alive again.”
Clara slowly lowered the stapler, her anger warring with a horrifying realization of how deep and systemic the syndicate’s cruelty truly ran. She walked around the desk, stopping a few feet away from the weeping woman.
“If Arthur has your daughter, why are you here?” Clara demanded sharply. “Why didn't you stay with the police or run away with Vince?”
“Because Vince let it slip on the drive down to the station that Maya isn't even being held in Canada,” Elena whispered, looking up with eyes red and swollen from crying. “They’re keeping her in the secure archives beneath Arthur’s downtown headquarters—the exact same building where they’re currently processing the final digital transfer of your grandfather’s estate.”
Clara stared at Elena, her mind calculating the staggering risks. The local police believed the case was closed and the suspects were securely behind bars. Vince and Arthur believed Marcus was neutralized and Clara was isolated at home with her baby. They had no idea that the master files, the audio recordings, and the proof of their entire criminal enterprise were currently sitting on the flash drive plugged into the computer right in front of them.
“They think they’ve won,” Clara said quietly, a cold, dangerous resolve settling over her features. She walked back to the desk, ejected the flash drive, and slipped it safely into the pocket of her navy zip-up hoodie.
Elena scrambled up to her feet, wiping her face with the sleeve of her sweater. “What are you going to do? Arthur has an entire private security detail guarding that building.”
“I’m going to finish what my husband started,” Clara replied firmly, walking past Elena toward the nursery door. “Only this time, we aren't playing by their rules.”
Ten minutes later, infant Leo was safely strapped into his car seat in the back of Clara’s sedan, fast asleep and wearing his star-patterned onesie. Elena sat quietly in the passenger seat, gripping the dashboard as Clara pulled out of the driveway without turning on her headlights, letting the car roll silently down the dark suburban street.
