Chapter 1 - The Broken Nursery

The pastel yellow walls of the nursery seemed to close in as Clara’s hand locked tighter into Elena’s hair, yanking her head down toward the wooden crib. Below them, little Leo writhed in his star-patterned onesie, his tiny lungs shredding air as he reached out with frantic, chubby hands. Clara’s navy zip-up hoodie rustled violently with every aggressive heave of her shoulders. Her face was a mask of cold, terrifying fury, completely stripped of the polite neighborly warmth she had projected for the past year.

“You will answer for this!” Clara screamed, her voice cracking with a mixture of raw grief and venomous rage.

Elena clawed desperately at Clara’s wrist, her face flushed crimson from the awkward, agonizing angle of her neck. Tears spilled over Elena’s eyelashes, but they were fueled by trapped panic rather than remorse.

“Let go of me, Clara! You are out of your mind!” Elena shrieked back, her voice high and breathless. “You have no idea what you’re looking at! Get off my hair!”

“Don’t you dare lie to my face!” Clara countered, her grip tightening until her knuckles turned ghostly white. “I saw the adoption papers on your kitchen counter. I heard you talking to the agency on the phone this morning. This isn’t your baby, Elena. This is my flesh and blood, and you planned to vanish into thin air with him!”

Before Elena could fashion another desperate excuse, heavy footsteps thudded down the hallway. Marcus burst into the room, his grey t-shirt slightly rumpled, his dark hair messy with sleep and stress. His athletic frame blocked the doorway for a split second before his eyes locked onto the scene over the crib. His expression shifted instantly from sleepy confusion to sheer, unadulterated shock, followed by a dark, dangerous anger.

“Clara, stop! What the hell are you doing? Let her go right now!” Marcus roared, rushing forward with his hands outstretched to pry Clara’s fingers loose.

Clara whipped her head toward him, her eyes blazing with a betrayal that cut deeper than any knife. She shoved Marcus away with a sudden burst of adrenaline, keeping her other hand pinned firmly to Elena’s hair.

“Stay back, Marcus!” Clara sobbed, her voice dropping into a dangerous, chilling whisper. “Ask your precious friend here why she has a baby carrier packed in her trunk, and ask her whose name is actually on the hospital discharge papers hidden inside your desk drawer.”

Marcus froze dead in his tracks, his breath catching in his throat as the color completely drained from his face.
