Chapter 5: The Ledger of Lies

Dawn broke slowly over the estate, painting the eastern sky in bruised shades of purple and gray. Damian had not slept a single minute. He sat at the massive oak desk in the study, the leather-bound journal open before him alongside the stack of financial documents Vivian had referenced. He needed to be methodical. Emotion had blinded him once; it could not afford to do so again. If Vivian had implicated his own corporate accounts in her fraudulent schemes, he needed to trace every single transaction back to its absolute source before handing the evidence over to federal investigators who couldn't be easily bought off by local municipal politics.

The office phone rang at precisely six-thirty in the morning, cutting through the heavy silence like a razor blade. Damian snatched up the receiver on the second ring.

"Mr. Vance," a crisp, professional voice spoke from the other end of the line. It was Marcus Vance, his senior corporate attorney and a man of absolute integrity. "I received your encrypted message from last night. I’ve already pulled the digital backup logs from the firm’s main servers dating back eighteen months."

"And?" Damian demanded, leaning forward, resting his elbows on the dark wood of the desk.

"And you were right to be suspicious," Marcus replied grimly. "The signatures on the asset transfer forms for Clara’s charitable foundation were forged using a digital raster stamp. But more importantly, the IP address originating those transfers doesn't trace back to your office or your home network. It leads directly to a private terminal registered under a shell corporation owned by Vivian's brother, Julian Vance."

Damian closed his eyes for a brief moment, letting out a long, shuddering breath. The web was broader than he had initially thought. It was a family enterprise of corporate sabotage and calculated murder. "Julian," Damian muttered. "The golden boy of the city council."

"The very same," Marcus confirmed. "He's been positioning himself for a mayoral run next year, funded largely by the assets stripped from Clara’s estate. Damian, this is explosive. But we cannot just walk into a precinct with a digital printout. Julian has friends in high places. We need a complete, unbroken chain of physical custody for the hard drive, and we need a witness who can place Vivian inside Clara's private room the night the ring was stolen."

"We have a witness," Damian said firmly, his mind flashing to Lily standing in the dining room, pointing her small finger at Vivian's wrist. "My daughter saw everything."

"A child’s testimony in a high-profile murder and fraud case will be torn apart by their defense attorneys in minutes," Marcus cautioned gently. "We need physical proof that ties Vivian directly to the crime scene beyond a reasonable doubt."
