Chapter 4: Confrontation in the Study

The heavy oak door of the study creaked open softly, breaking the thick silence of the room. Damian did not look up from the open journal; he already knew who was standing in the doorway. The subtle scent of expensive perfume drifted into the space, mixing with the musty smell of old paper and dust.

"You shouldn't be poking around in there, Damian," Vivian said, her voice smooth, completely devoid of the panic he expected to find. "Clara was a sentimental woman. She kept all kinds of romanticized notions locked away in those pages. None of it reflects reality."

Damian slowly closed the journal. The leather cover made a dull, heavy thud against the wooden desk. He stood up, towering over her in the dim light of the study, his eyes dark and unyielding.

"Reality," Damian repeated coldly, stepping around the desk to close the distance between them. "Let's talk about reality, Vivian. You didn't just steal a ring. You stole my wife's life, her work, and her peace of mind. You poisoned her slowly, right under my roof, while I was too blind and overworked to notice what was happening."

Vivian didn't flinch. Instead, a slow, calculated smile spread across her painted lips. She crossed her arms, leaning slightly against the doorframe as if she were inspecting a piece of real estate she intended to acquire. "And who are you going to convince, Damian? The police? The medical examiner signed off on her death certificate months ago. Heart failure brought on by severe systemic stress. There is no body left to exhume, and every financial transfer was routed through legally compliant channels with your own signature on half the corporate resolutions."

"You forged my signature," Damian spat, his patience finally snapping. He grabbed her by the shoulders, shaking her with a sudden, controlled fury. "I have the ledger right here. Every illegal transfer, every threat you made in writing."

"Let go of me," Vivian hissed, her eyes flashing with sudden malice as she shoved him back with surprising strength. "If you ruin me, Damian, I promise you won't be left standing either. I have documents of my own—letters proving your company was laundering money through those exact same accounts to fund your expansion projects. We go down together, or we reach an arrangement."

Damian stared at her, the sheer audacity of her proposal staggering him. She wasn't just a thief; she was a predator holding a grenade with the pin already pulled, daring him to let go. But as he looked at her cold, calculating eyes, he realized something vital: Vivian was arrogant, and arrogance always left a trail of breadcrumbs for someone paying close enough attention.
