Chapter 3: The Secret Compartment

Damian did not wait for Vivian to formulate a defense. He turned on his heel and strode down the long corridor toward Clara’s private study—a room that had remained untouched since her passing. The heavy oak door yielded to the heavy brass key he kept tucked deep inside his inner jacket pocket. The scent inside hadn't changed; it still carried the faint, lingering notes of aged paper, polished mahogany, and Clara’s signature lavender fragrance.

He switched on the amber desk lamp, casting long, dramatic shadows across the bookshelves lined with leather-bound volumes on architectural history and structural design. Damian walked directly to the antique oak desk Clara’s grandfather had crafted by hand. He knew every inch of this furniture, or so he had believed. But tonight, viewing the room through the lens of betrayal, he noticed something slightly off-kilter about the lower left molding of the pedestal base.

Kneeling on the Persian rug, Damian ran his fingertips along the carved wooden floral motifs. His index finger caught on a tiny groove that hadn't been there when he last cleaned out the desk. With a firm, downward press, a hidden spring clicked softly, and a narrow wood panel slid open, revealing a velvet-lined compartment tucked deep within the core of the desk.

Inside the hidden alcove sat a small, leather-bound journal and a stack of legal documents tied together with a simple black ribbon. Damian’s breath caught in his throat. He reached inside, his fingers trembling slightly as he pulled the items into the warm pool of lamplight. The journal bore Clara’s elegant, sloping handwriting on the very first page: If you are reading this, Damian, it means the paperwork I filed was not enough to stop her.

The revelation struck him with the force of a physical blow. Clara hadn't simply fallen ill and passed away peacefully; her medical files, her corporate emails, and her sudden decline were tied directly to a financial conspiracy that involved Vivian’s family firm. Damian flipped open the journal, his eyes racing across lines of agonizing revelation. Clara had discovered that Vivian was systematically embezzling funds from their shared architectural trust, using forged signatures and dummy corporations registered offshore.

When Clara threatened to go to the authorities, Vivian had offered a false truce, bringing over a thermos of herbal tea during a late-night work session just two days before Clara was hospitalized with mysterious organ failure. Damian gripped the edges of the desk so tightly his fingertips turned white, a suffocating wave of rage and guilt washing over him. He had welcomed the murderer into his home, allowed her to sit at his dining table, and let her kiss his daughter's forehead goodnight.
