Chapter 9: The Siege at Dawn

The first pale rays of dawn were just beginning to pierce through the thick coastal fog when the eerie silence of the morning was shattered by the harsh roar of approaching diesel engines. Julian snapped his head up from the journal, locking eyes with Master Chen across the cabin. The heavy thud of multiple car doors slamming shut echoed through the clearing outside, followed by the crunch of heavy boots on the gravel path.
"They found us," Julian said, his voice completely devoid of panic, replaced by a cold, lethal focus. He stood up swiftly, slipping the glass drive into the inner pocket of his jacket and securing the metal lockbox beneath the floorboards.
Chen rose with a grim nod, grabbing a heavy iron fireplace poker. "Vance must have activated a dead-man’s switch before he was arrested. The syndicate knows we have the Zurich drive, and they won't leave loose ends."
Heavy blows pounded against the wooden front door, splintering the oak frame. With a deafening crash, the door was kicked inward, and three large men in tactical black suits swarmed into the cabin. Their faces were obscured by dark balaclavas, and they moved with the merciless efficiency of professional hitmen. Julian reacted instantly, lunging forward to intercept the first intruder before he could raise his weapon.
The fight was brutal and chaotic within the confined space of the cabin. Julian traded heavy blows with the attacker, his tailored shirt tearing as he used his momentum to throw the larger man through the front window. Glass shattered everywhere, raining down onto the porch outside. But as one went down, two more stepped through the splintered doorway, closing in on Master Chen with cold determination.
"Chen, get out!" Julian shouted, dodging a sweeping kick and driving his elbow into his opponent’s ribs.
Chen swung the heavy iron poker with surprising speed, striking the second intruder across the shoulder and sending him stumbling backward against the wall. But age and fatigue were catching up to the older man. A third operative lunged from the shadows, striking Chen across the temple with the butt of a heavy tactical rifle. Chen collapsed to the floor with a muffled groan, the gray shirt staining crimson against his weathered skin.

"No!" Julian roared, a surge of adrenaline pushing past his physical limits. He drove his fists forward with relentless fury, overwhelming the remaining attacker and knocking him unconscious with a decisive blow to the jaw.
Julian didn't hesitate. He rushed to Chen’s side, dropping to his knees and lifting the older man’s head. Chen’s eyes fluttered open, breathing heavily, a thin line of blood trickling down his forehead. "Go... take the drive," Chen whispered, his voice weak and raspy. "Don't let them win."
