Chapter 8 - The Countdown on the Screen

"Cut the power!" the scarred man roared, dropping his satellite phone and diving across the mahogany desk, his heavy boots kicking up dust as he slammed his hands against the keyboard.

The stocky man scrambled down the concrete stairs, lunging toward the wall outlet where the server tower was plugged in, but his fingers slipped against the slick plastic casing.

5... 4... 3...

The digital numbers ticked down in bold, ruthless red font across the glowing monitor. Clara stood frozen, watching the progress bar drain backward with terrifying speed.

2...

With a brutal yank, the stocky man ripped the main power cable straight out of the wall socket, sending a shower of tiny blue sparks flying into the air. The monitor flickered violently, cutting to absolute black, leaving the basement illuminated only by the shaking beams of their flashlights.

The room fell dead silent, save for the heavy, ragged breathing of the four adults standing among the stacks of cash and ledgers.

"Is it gone?" Mark asked, his voice tight with tension as he gripped the tire iron a little tighter in the dim light.

The scarred man straightened up slowly from the desk, his face bathed in the cold, flickering reflection of the dead screen. He let out a low, dangerous growl, his knuckles cracking as he clenched his fists.

"The local drive is wiped," the scarred man said, his voice deadly calm. "But the remote sync server was already pinging an external IP address in the Cayman Islands the moment the warning triggered. Someone else just downloaded every single file off this machine in real time."

Clara felt a cold chill wash over her skin, entirely unrelated to the pool water or the storm raging outside. "Someone else? Who?"

"Not someone else," a familiar, breathless voice called out from the top of the concrete stairs.

All four of them whipped their heads toward the stairwell. Ethan stood at the top, leaning heavily against the open doorframe of the hidden pantry entrance. His blue sweater was torn, his hair disheveled, but the terror in his eyes had vanished, replaced by an unsettling, manic calmness. In his hand, he held a sleek backup tablet, its screen glowing with the exact same cryptocurrency wallet interface that had just flashed on the basement computer.

"Me," Ethan said, a slow, terrible smile spreading across his face.

The scarred man took two steps toward the stairs, his hand dipping inside his coat toward his shoulder holster. "Hand over the tablet, Ethan. Right now."

"I wouldn't do that if I were you, Frank," Ethan replied smoothly, tapping the screen of the tablet with his thumb. "The moment you pull that piece out of your holster, an automated dead-man switch sends the decryption keys for every single financial record in this room directly to the federal prosecutor's office in downtown Chicago. Including Vance’s primary offshore accounts."

Frank—the scarred man—froze mid-stride. His hand remained buried inside his coat, his body coiled like a spring ready to snap. For a long, agonizing moment, the two men stared each other down across the narrow staircase.

"You're bluffing," Frank whispered.

"Try me," Ethan laughed softly, a sound devoid of any humanity. He looked past Frank, his eyes locking directly onto Clara standing near the mahogany desk. "You wanted to see how much of this weekend was about me, Clara? Well, the truth is, this entire house, this marriage, every single year we spent together—it was all just a staging ground for this exact moment."

Clara stared up at him, her chest burning with a fierce, cold rage that pushed aside all the shock and grief. "You built a prison for yourself, Ethan. And you expected me to stay inside it."

"No, Clara," Ethan said, his smile widening into something truly monstrous. "I built an exit strategy. And you just helped me lock the door from the outside."

Before Frank could leap up the stairs, Ethan pressed a single button on the tablet screen, and the heavy security door at the top of the stairs slammed shut with a deafening, hydraulic lock, plunging them into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
