Chapter 14 - The Second Explosion at the Gate

The second explosion wasn't muffled like the one in the basement; it was a sharp, concussive boom that rattled the remaining glass in the kitchen windows and sent a towering column of orange and black flame shooting up into the stormy night sky near the front entrance of the property.
Officer Miller instantly spun around, drawing his weapon again and shouting into his shoulder mic. "Shots fired? Status at the front gate, report!"
“We got a secondary breach!” an agitated officer's voice yelled over the radio static. “A secondary vehicle—unmarked black van—tried to ram the police roadblock at the top of the driveway and detonated an auxiliary fuel cell! We need fire suppression units at the gate immediately!”
Frank’s face hardened instantly into a mask of pure predator focus. He exchanged a lightning-fast, silent glance with the stocky man beside him.
"That wasn't an accident," Frank growled, his eyes narrowing as he stared down the dark hallway leading toward the front of the house. "Vance didn't drive off that overpass alone. Someone was cleaning up the loose ends before the federal audit team could secure the physical handoff."
Clara’s heart skipped a beat. "Cleaning up? You mean Ethan didn't crash on Route 9?"
"Ethan was just a middleman, Mrs. Ethan," Frank said grimly, taking a slow step backward toward the backyard fence line. "He thought he was the mastermind running the whole show, but guys like him are always just expendable leverage for the syndicate higher-ups. Once his server started dumping data, he became a liability."
Before Officer Miller could turn back to detain them, Frank and the stocky man moved with startling, coordinated speed, vaulting cleanly over the wooden backyard fence and disappearing into the dense, rain-soaked woods beyond the property line.
"Hey! Stop right there!" Officer Miller shouted, taking two steps toward the fence before realizing he couldn't leave the crime scene unsecured with civilians present. He lowered his weapon with a frustrated curse and hit his radio. "Suspects fled on foot toward the wooded perimeter behind the pool. Requesting K-9 unit backup immediately!"
Mark stared at the empty fence line where the two men had vanished, his chest heaving as the gravity of the entire night finally settled over his shoulders. He looked down at Clara, who was standing completely still amidst the flashing lights, watching the thick black smoke billow from the front gate.
"They're gone," Mark whispered. "And Ethan... if what that man said is true..."
"Ethan made his bed," Clara said, her voice devoid of any pity, yet rich with a profound, hard-earned peace. She looked down at her bare feet, still caked in mud and pool water, and then up at the dark, stormy sky where the clouds were finally beginning to break, letting the first pale hint of dawn light pierce through the horizon.
Officer Miller holstered his weapon permanently and walked back over to them, holding a heavy wool thermal blanket he had retrieved from the back of his cruiser. He draped it gently over Clara's shoulders, his expression softened with deep respect.
"You're going to need to come down to the precinct with us, Mrs. Vance, to give a full formal statement to the federal investigators," Officer Miller said gently.
Clara pulled the warm wool blanket tightly around her wet green top and brown towel, taking one final, lingering look at the swimming pool where her old life had been so casually drowned just hours ago.
"I'm ready," Clara said, turning her back on the smoking ruins of the house and walking steadily toward the waiting police cruiser. "Let's go finish it."

As she slid into the back seat of the cruiser, the dashboard radio crackled to life with a breaking dispatch update from the federal task force downtown.
