Chapter 13 - The Federal Flash Notification

The shrill, multi-tone emergency broadcast alert pierced through the sound of the rain, turning the backyard into a chorus of electronic wails. Officer Miller stopped dead in his tracks, his hand dropping away from his holster as he pulled his department radio closer to his face, his eyes wide as he read the incoming text cascading across his LED screen.
"Dispatch, do you copy?" Officer Miller spoke rapidly into the mic. "I'm looking at the federal flash right now. Is this tied to the Route 9 crash?"
“Negative, unit four,” the dispatcher’s voice squawked back through the static. “That alert was broadcast automatically from a federal secure server in Washington. The encrypted backup packets recovered from the Vance residence just triggered an automated asset-seizure warrant across three states. All municipal accounts tied to the ledger are being locked in real time.”
Frank let out a sharp, breathless laugh that sounded dangerously close to hysteria. He looked down at his own encrypted satellite phone, which was vibrating uncontrollably as dozens of missed alerts scrolled across its dark screen.
"Vance's entire network just went dark," Frank muttered, looking up at Clara with a completely altered expression. "You didn't just crash Ethan's little game, Mrs. Ethan. You triggered a total system reset for the entire county."
Mark pushed himself up from the wet grass, wiping mud from his forehead as he stared down at his own phone, where his banking app was currently displaying a stark red banner: ACCOUNT FROZEN PENDING FEDERAL RESTITUTION VERIFICATION.
"Wait, my account is frozen too?" Mark panicked, looking up at Clara with a mixture of betrayal and disbelief. "Clara, you said this would recover my mother's retirement fund! If my account is frozen by federal authorities, how am I supposed to feed my family?"
"It has to be frozen before it can be reclaimed, Mark," Clara explained patiently, her voice cutting through his panic with absolute authority. She stood up from the grass, clutching her brown towel tightly around her shoulders as the cold wind whipped across the pool patio. "When Ethan used your investment money as collateral, the funds were funneled through his intermediary shell company. The only way the Department of Justice can legally return those stolen assets to you is if they're seized as direct proceeds of his fraud first."
Mark swallowed hard, his hands trembling as he stared at his phone screen. "How long does a federal asset recovery audit take?"
"Usually six to eight weeks," Clara replied without missing a beat. "Once the forensic team cross-references the ledger I'm handing over to Officer Miller right now, your name will be cleared as a defrauded victim, and the court will issue an emergency restitution order directly from Ethan's frozen offshore accounts."
Officer Miller stepped forward, holding out an evidence bag. "Ma'am, I'm going to need that phone now. Chain of custody protocol requires all digital media to be sealed immediately."
Clara didn't hesitate. She unlocked the screen one last time, hit the final upload confirmation button to ensure a cloud-mirrored copy was securely stored in an off-site federal magistrate dropbox, and then dropped her cracked smartphone directly into the officer's clear plastic bag.
"It's all there, Officer," Clara said softly, watching the blue light of the screen fade away as the bag was sealed shut. "Every lie, every dollar, every name."

As the sirens in the distance began to multiply, signaling the arrival of state troopers, fire engines, and federal investigators down the residential street, a sudden, blinding flash of light erupted from the front driveway, followed by the heavy, chaotic shouting of first responders rushing toward a secondary explosion near the front gate.
