Chapter 9 - The Freezing Foundation

The ambient temperature in the cellar dropped so rapidly that frost began to form in delicate, crystalline patterns across the concrete floor and the metal casing of the washing machine. Mark shivered violently, his light clothing offering no protection against the sudden, unnatural cold that felt as if it were radiating directly from the earth beneath the foundation.
"Mark! Can you hear me?"
Sarah’s muffled voice suddenly broke through the silence from the top of the basement stairs, sounding frantic and distressed. The sound of her voice gave Mark a desperate surge of adrenaline.
"Sarah! The door is locked! They locked it from the outside!" Mark shouted back, pointing his phone flashlight up toward the closed stairwell door. "Find the master key in the kitchen drawer! Hurry, it's freezing down here!"
"I'm trying, Mark! But the house... the house is changing!" Sarah screamed back, her voice sounding distant, as if she were speaking from the opposite end of a long, empty tunnel rather than the hallway just a few feet away.
Mark turned his attention back to the two girls standing near the washing machine. The real Lily was still standing rigidly with her milky eyes, but Abigail was slowly walking toward him, her bare feet leaving wet, frozen footprints on the icy concrete floor.
"You can't save her, mister," Abigail said softly, stopping just a few feet away. The air around the ghostly child was so cold that tiny ice crystals swirled in the air like a localized snowstorm. "She agreed to trade places with me. She wanted to see what it felt like to sleep in the cold walls."
"Lily, listen to my voice!" Mark ignored the apparition, taking a step toward his daughter through the freezing fog. "Fight it! Don't let her take you!"
Lily’s eyes fluttered, the milky film momentarily parting to reveal the familiar blue iris beneath. She gasped sharply, sucking in a lungful of the freezing air, and her knees buckled. Mark lunged forward, catching her in his arms just before she hit the icy floor. She was ice-cold to the touch, her skin pale and clammy, but she was breathing.
"Daddy..." Lily whimpered, her normal voice returning as she buried her face in Mark’s chest, clutching her stuffed bunny with trembling fingers. "It's so cold... they won't let us leave."
Suddenly, the heavy basement door at the top of the stairs blew inward with a deafening crash, the wooden frame splintering into a thousand pieces as Sarah tumbled down the steps, landing hard on the concrete floor.

Mark rushed over to help his wife up, but as Sarah lifted her head, Mark saw that her eyes were no longer brown—they were completely milky white, and a terrifying, identical smile stretched across her face.
