Chapter 2 - The Corridor of Shadows

The glow of the television screen in the den cast long, distorted blue shadows across the walls as Mark approached the multi-split monitor system. His heavy boots made muted thuds on the carpet, each step fueled by a sudden, irrational spike of dread that he tried hard to suppress. Sarah trailed a few steps behind him, her arms crossed tightly over her chest, rubbing her elbows as if trying to ward off an unexpected chill in the climate-controlled house.

Mark’s fingers hovered over the keyboard, his knuckles pale under the dim ambient light of the room. He hated that his daughter had worked herself into such a hysterical state, but the sheer intensity in Lily’s voice had bypassed his usual parental skepticism. He clicked the mouse to expand the feed from the basement hallway camera, the camera that covered the utility room and the adjacent narrow corridor leading to the old storm shelter.

The live feed flickered, lines of digital static rolling vertically across the screen before stabilizing into a high-definition black-and-white image of the quiet, empty hallway. Everything looked normal. The industrial shelving units stood in their usual orderly rows. The washing machine and dryer sat silently side by side, their metallic doors reflecting the overhead fluorescent tubes. Mark let out a slow, audible breath, feeling a slight release of the tension in his shoulders.

"See, Lily?" Mark called back over his shoulder toward the dining room, where his daughter stood clutching her stuffed bunny. "There is nothing down there. Just the laundry baskets and the spare boxes."

"Wait, Mark, look closer," Sarah whispered, her voice dropping an octave as she stepped right up to the side of the desk, leaning forward until her nose was almost touching the glass of the monitor.

Mark’s eyes snapped back to the screen. The timestamp in the corner read 6:42 PM—just twenty minutes ago, right before Lily had run upstairs screaming. As he watched, the static on the screen rippled again, and two small figures stepped smoothly out from the blind spot behind the water heater.

They were two young girls wearing identical vintage white dresses, their movements unnaturally fluid and synchronized. They walked hand in hand down the empty hallway, heading straight toward the lens.

Mark froze, the blood draining completely from his face as he recognized one of the faces looking up at the camera lens, and the terrifying truth hit him with the force of a physical blow.
