Chapter 12 - The Mirror’s Edge

Absolute darkness enveloped the cellar, heavy and absolute, stripping away every sense of direction except for the freezing cold pressing against Mark’s skin. He stood frozen, holding Lily tightly against his chest, listening to the soft, rhythmic breathing of his daughter and the faint, wet sound of footsteps drawing closer in the pitch black.
"Daddy, touch the wall," Lily whispered directly into his ear, her voice surprisingly calm now, devoid of its earlier terror. "Abigail says the wall isn't real. It's just a looking glass."
Mark reached out a trembling hand through the freezing air, his fingers brushing against the rough, damp texture of the concrete foundation. But as his hand slid across the surface, the texture changed instantly from cold stone to smooth, warm, polished glass.
A faint, pale amber light began to glow from behind the glass surface, casting long, delicate shadows that revealed an identical cellar—or perhaps the original basement of the house that had burned down decades ago. Through the translucent barrier, Mark could see the faint outlines of wooden support beams wrapped in old newspapers and vintage furniture covered in white dust sheets.
"Mark," a voice murmured softly from directly beside him in the dark—not Sarah’s voice, and not Abigail’s, but an older, resonant voice that sounded like a weary homeowner from another era. "You built your life right on top of our memories. You thought you could pave over the past and pretend nothing ever happened here."
Mark pressed his palm flat against the glass, feeling a strange, magnetic vibration pulsing through the barrier. "I didn't know," Mark said into the dark. "We bought the property legally. We had no idea what happened to this place."
"The ground always remembers, mister," the voice replied, and a small, cold hand suddenly grasped Mark’s free wrist from out of the darkness—a hand with small, delicate fingers that felt like ice.
Before Mark could pull away, the glass barrier beneath his palm fractured with a loud, ringing crack, sending a web of glowing white lines spreading across the invisible wall.

"Hold on to me, Lily!" Mark shouted, tightening his grip on his daughter as the floor beneath their feet suddenly gave way, plunging them downward through the fractured glass into a blinding white flash of light.
