Chapter 14 - The Final Choice

The warm, amber light of the vintage basement hummed softly, casting a gentle glow over the wood-paneled walls and the framed portraits of the family from another era. Sarah kept one arm wrapped securely around Lily, her eyes fixed on Abigail with a mix of lingering fear and deep, maternal empathy.

"What are your names?" Sarah asked softly, taking a tentative step forward, her voice no longer trembling.

Abigail smiled, the coldness that had defined her presence earlier completely gone, replaced by the innocent warmth of a young child. "I'm Abigail, and my sister is Clara. We were playing hide-and-seek down here when the storm hit and the house caught fire. Our parents couldn't reach us in time." She gestured toward the portraits on the wall. "We've been waiting here ever since, hoping someone would open the door and say our names out loud."

Mark looked down at Lily, who clutched her stuffed bunny and stepped forward, walking right up to Abigail without any hesitation.

"My name is Lily," the little girl said clearly. "And this is Mr. Bops. You can play with him if you're lonely, but you have to give him back when you're done."

Abigail looked down at the stuffed bunny, a quiet tear tracing a clean path down her cheek—not a tear of sorrow or malice, but of pure, human release. She reached out and gently touched the stuffed toy’s ear. "Thank you, Lily. That's the nicest thing anyone has ever said to us."

The heavy wooden door at the far end of the room with the modern brass plaque began to glow with a brilliant, warm morning light, the sounds of birds chirping outside filtering through the cracks in the wood.

"The door is open," Abigail whispered, fading slowly into a soft mist of golden light that drifted upward toward the ceiling beams. "You can go home now. We aren't lonely anymore."

Sarah grabbed Mark’s hand, tears of relief streaming down her face as they walked together toward the glowing exit, leading Lily out of the past and back toward the morning sun.
