Chapter 9

The atmosphere in the emergency room instantly shifted from routine medical work to high-stakes tension. Patients in the waiting area turned to look at the commotion, while the triage nurses quietly positioned themselves near the security desks.
Dr. Hayes stepped in front of Clara, blocking Mark's direct path. "Mr. Miller, this is a restricted medical area. You cannot enter the evaluation zone without authorization, especially given that my patient has expressed a desire not to see you."
Mark stopped, a thin, patronizing smile touching the corners of his mouth. He looked over Dr. Hayes's shoulder at Clara, his eyes flashing with suppressed malice. "Doctor, I understand my wife is upset. We had a domestic disagreement—she struck me with a heavy object during a hormonal episode—and we are naturally concerned for her mental stability. As her legal husband and the primary policyholder on her insurance, I have a right to ensure she receives proper psychiatric care."
"I am not mentally unstable, Mark," Clara said, stepping out from behind Dr. Hayes. Her voice was clear, ringing with authority that commanded attention. She held the certified medical papers securely against her chest. "And you don't care about my care. You care about the federal audit that hits your firm on Monday."
Mark's smile faltered for a fraction of a second, the mask slipping to reveal the cornered predator beneath. Evelyn stepped forward, her face twisted in righteous indignation. "Listen to her, everyone! She's delusional, paranoid, and clearly a danger to herself and her unborn child. Mark, call the magistrate. We are taking her home right now."
The two private security guards accompanying Mark took a step forward, their hands resting on their utility belts. But St. Jude Memorial security was faster. Three hospital guards, bulky men in high-visibility vests, materialized from the hallway behind the nurses' station, positioning themselves firmly between Mark's men and Clara.
"Sir, take a step back," the lead hospital guard commanded, his hand resting on his taser holster. "This is a private medical facility. If you do not leave the premises immediately, we will call local police for trespassing and assault."

Marcus Vance stepped forward, holding up his smartphone, which was recording the entire exchange. "I'd listen to the guard, Mark. I've already transmitted your corporate audit files and the embezzlement records to the federal task force downtown. They know about the Cayman accounts. They know about the life insurance policy."
Mark went entirely white. The color drained from his face so fast he looked as though he might faint. Evelyn let out a sharp gasp, grabbing her son's arm. "Mark, is that true?" she whispered frantically.
