Chapter 8: Securing the Evidence

Clara didn't hesitate. She pushed open her car door, stepping out into the cold night air and facing Marcus with a fierce determination that surprised even herself. "Let's go back inside. Dr. Hayes and Sarah are inside the ER. They just performed a clean ultrasound and logged my vitals. Those records are time-stamped and legally untouchable as long as they stay in the hospital network."

Marcus nodded approvingly. "Good. Lead the way. I'll park my car in the proper visitor bay so we don't draw security attention."

Within five minutes, Clara and Marcus were back inside the brightly lit emergency department. They found Dr. Hayes and Sarah standing near the nurses' station, reviewing charts. When Dr. Hayes saw Marcus enter with Clara, his expression tightened with professional caution.

"Clara, who is this?" Dr. Hayes asked, stepping forward.

"This is Marcus Vance, Dr. Hayes. He's the compliance officer from Mark's firm," Clara explained quickly, keeping her voice low and controlled. "Dr. Hayes, I need a complete, certified copy of my medical evaluation from tonight, including the ultrasound logs and the physical assessment notes. Mark is trying to file a fraudulent psychiatric injunction against me, and those records are my only defense."

Sarah didn't ask questions. She immediately turned to her computer terminal, her fingers flying across the keyboard. "I'm printing a physical certified copy right now, and I'm uploading the encrypted digital file to the hospital's secure legal archive with a restricted access flag. Only a federal subpoena can touch this."

Marcus pulled a small flash drive from his pocket and placed it on the counter next to Sarah's keyboard. "And add these financial audit trails to the digital archive. They prove the coercion and embezzlement."

Before Sarah could hit enter, the double doors of the emergency entrance swung open with a loud swish. Mark walked into the lobby, flanked by two private security guards in dark suits. His temple was bandaged with a sterile white gauze pad, but his face was an mask of calculated calm. Evelyn walked right beside him, her posture rigid, her eyes scanning the room like a hawk hunting prey.

"Clara, there you are," Mark called out, his voice carrying across the quiet ER with smooth, theatrical concern. "Thank God you're safe. When you ran out into the night in your condition, we were beside ourselves with worry."
