Chapter 13

By late November, the legal proceedings against Mark and Evelyn Miller were moving with relentless efficiency. The federal district court in Ohio formally indicted Mark on seven counts of wire fraud, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement, while Evelyn was charged with conspiracy and obstruction of justice after investigators found shredded corporate documents in her home shredder.

Clara did not have to attend the preliminary hearings in person; her depositions were submitted via secure video link from Chloe's living room, handled by federal prosecutors who treated her with utmost respect and professionalism. Marcus Vance served as the star witness for the prosecution, providing meticulous spreadsheets and audio recordings of Mark boasting about his financial insulation strategies.

One afternoon, while scrolling through her tablet on the back porch, Clara received a formal notification from the county probate court. The judge had officially annulled Mark's fraudulent asset transfers, restoring her late father's estate account in full, along with a punitive restitution order drawn from Mark's frozen corporate shares. She was officially, legally free.

Chloe walked out onto the patio carrying two glasses of iced tea, handing one to Clara. "Looks like justice is working for once. How does it feel to be a millionaire heiress with a clean slate?"

Clara laughed, taking a sip of the cold tea. "It feels surreal. Mostly, it feels quiet. I didn't realize how much noise was in my life until it was all gone."

"Well, you have a nursery to paint," Chloe pointed out, smiling broadly. "And I happen to know an interior designer who specializes in pastel jungle themes—completely free of charge for my favorite sister."

Clara placed a hand over her rounded belly, feeling a sharp, distinct kick from within. The baby was active, strong, and growing by the day. She looked out over the quiet, tree-lined suburban street, watching the autumn leaves drift gently to the ground. The nightmare in the kitchen felt like a lifetime ago, a dark chapter in a book she had already finished reading.
