Chapter 15

The delivery room at Columbus General Hospital was warm, bright, and filled with the gentle hum of medical monitors. It was early February when Clara’s labor began—swift, intense, and entirely natural. Chloe stood by her right side, holding her hand and offering words of encouragement, while Dr. Hayes, who had temporarily relocated to a Columbus practice, scrubbed in to oversee the delivery as a special family friend.

"You're doing fantastic, Clara. One more strong push and we'll meet our little miracle," Dr. Hayes said encouragingly from the foot of the delivery table.

Clara gripped the sides of the bed, closed her eyes, and channeled every ounce of strength she possessed—the same strength that had carried her through the terrifying night in the kitchen, through the federal investigations, and through the rebuilding of her entire world. With one final, powerful push, a clear, lustrous cry filled the room.

"It's a girl," Dr. Hayes announced with a warm smile, lifting a healthy, squalling infant wrapped in a warm pink blanket and placing her gently onto Clara's chest.

Clara looked down at the tiny face, tracing the soft skin of her daughter's cheek. The baby’s eyes blinked open, blinking against the bright lights of the delivery room with a calm, steady gaze.

"Welcome to the world, Maya," Clara whispered, pressing a soft kiss to her daughter's forehead.

Chloe was wiping away joyful tears, stroking her niece's tiny hand. Outside the window, the first rays of a brilliant winter sunrise broke through the clouds, casting a golden glow across the snow-covered city. Clara looked out at the light, feeling a profound peace settle deep within her soul. The kitchen tile had cracked, the screen had shattered, and the old life had burned away, leaving behind fertile ground where something beautiful and unbreakable had finally taken root.
