Chapter 7

While the paramedics checked Clara’s vitals and prepped her for a precautionary trip to the hospital, Marcus stepped outside into the cool evening air to speak with the responding police officers. Two squad cars had pulled up to the curb, their red and blue lights painting erratic geometric patterns across the upscale brick facade of the restaurant. Marcus approached the officers with calm deliberation, identifying himself as the primary witness and the individual who had physically intervened. He recounted the sequence of events with precise clarity, detailing Julian’s verbal assault, the physical roughness of the arm-grab, and the critical discovery of the prescription medication on the floor. The officers listened intently, taking detailed notes on their tablets.

"He bolted north down the avenue about ten minutes ago," Marcus explained, pointing toward the bustling city street corner. "He was driving a dark sedan, license plate starts with a three. You’ll catch him easily if you move fast." The lead officer nodded, radioing the description to nearby units before turning back to Marcus with a look of professional appreciation. "Thank you for stepping in, sir. Situations like that can turn deadly in a heartbeat before we arrive." Marcus simply nodded, crossing his massive arms over his green t-shirt. He knew all too well how quickly domestic disputes could escalate into tragedies; it was the exact reason he never ignored a cry for help, regardless of how uncomfortable or dangerous the intervention might prove to be.

Inside the restaurant, Clara was being wheeled toward the exit on a comfortable medical transport chair. As she passed the floor-to-ceiling windows, she caught sight of Marcus talking to the police. A wave of profound gratitude washed over her, mingled with the terrifying realization of what her immediate future held. She had no home to return to; Julian controlled the lease, the bank accounts, and the car. But as the paramedic pushed open the door and wheeled her into the crisp night air, Marcus stepped forward to hold the heavy glass portal wide. He caught her eye and gave her a reassuring nod. In that simple gesture, Clara found the first true spark of hope that she would survive this ordeal and protect her unborn child.
