Chapter 10

Over the next three days, Clara’s hospital room transformed into a makeshift command center for reclaiming her life. With the help of the hospital’s legal aid network and Marcus, who checked in every evening after finishing his shift at a local logistics warehouse, she began untangling the complex financial and legal web Julian had woven around her. Julian had systematically cut her off from her own family, isolated her from her former colleagues, and hidden access to their joint accounts under layers of corporate obfuscation. But Marcus, using his pragmatic problem-solving skills, helped her locate old tax documents and employment records hidden in the cloud, giving her the ammunition needed to secure emergency financial support from the courts.
On the fourth afternoon, as Clara packed her few belongings into a modest duffel bag provided by the social work department, Marcus arrived with a sturdy cardboard box and a determined look in his eye. "The court granted the full restraining order this morning, and the judge froze Julian’s primary business accounts pending the divorce proceedings," Marcus announced, setting the box down on the bed. Clara stopped folding a maternity sweater, staring at him in sheer disbelief. "Already? The legal system usually moves like molasses," she said, her voice trembling with emotion. Marcus offered a wry, reassuring smile. "When you have high-definition video of a man assaulting a pregnant woman and screaming obscenities in a crowded upscale restaurant, judges tend to expedite the paperwork."
Clara laughed, a light, musical sound that felt entirely foreign to her own ears. The heavy cloud that had suffocated her existence for years had finally dissipated, replaced by the crisp, clear air of autonomy. "Where am I going to go, Marcus? The apartment lease is in his name, and even with the restraining order, I don't feel safe stepping foot back in that neighborhood," she admitted, her vulnerability resurfacing briefly. Marcus didn't hesitate for a single second. "My sister runs a quiet guesthouse three towns over. It's safe, entirely off the grid from Julian’s reach, and has a wonderful garden where you can rest and prepare for the baby." Clara looked into his steady eyes, reading the absolute sincerity written across his face, and willingly took the next terrifying step into her new reality.
