Chapter 11

The guesthouse was a charming, weathered Victorian home nestled beneath a sprawling canopy of ancient oak trees, worlds away from the sterile, high-pressure environment of the city. The air smelled of damp earth, pine needles, and blooming honeysuckle. Marcus’s sister, Sarah, a warm and fiercely protective woman with flour-dusted hands and kind eyes, met them on the wraparound porch with open arms. She didn't ask probing questions or dredge up the painful details of Clara’s past; she simply pulled Clara into a fierce, motherly embrace and handed her a mug of hot chamomile tea. "Welcome home, sweetheart. You take as long as you need to breathe," Sarah said softly, leading her inside to a sunlit bedroom overlooking the rear garden.

The room was furnished with antique wooden furniture, crisp white linens, and a bassinet tucked neatly in the corner, smelling faintly of lavender and fresh cotton. Clara stood by the window, watching the golden afternoon light filter through the leaves, feeling a profound sense of peace settle over her bruised soul for the first time in years. Marcus helped carry her small duffel bag upstairs, placing it neatly at the foot of the bed before lingering near the door. "I'll be staying in the cottage out back for the next few weeks while I handle some repairs for Sarah," Marcus explained, reading the unspoken question in her eyes. "You won't have to worry about anyone finding you here. The property is private, and the local sheriff is an old friend of mine."

Clara turned away from the window, her heart swelling with an emotion she hadn't anticipated feeling again so soon. "Why are you doing all of this, Marcus? You didn't even know me, yet you risked your safety, your time, everything to help me," she asked, her voice laced with a mixture of wonder and lingering suspicion. Marcus paused, his hand resting on the wooden doorframe. He looked out over the quiet garden before meeting her gaze directly. "Because nobody deserves to feel alone in a room full of people watching them break, Clara. I learned that the hard way a long time ago. Now get some rest. We have a bright future to build tomorrow." With a gentle nod, he slipped out of the room, leaving her wrapped in absolute safety.
