Chapter 2

The cold tile bit into Clara’s knees as she clutched the tiny white sock against her chest, her breath catching in her throat. Julian’s shadow hung over her like a thundercloud, his impatience radiating off him in palpable waves. He despised being embarrassed, and the lingering stares from the neighboring tables only fueled his toxic anger. Without a shred of empathy for her physical state, he leaned down and gripped her upper arm with a bruising force. His fingers dug sharply into her flesh through the delicate fabric of her light blue maternity dress. Clara gasped, a sharp cry escaping her lips before she could swallow it down, her body protesting the violent yank. Julian pulled her upward with reckless disregard for her pregnancy, his face twisted in an ugly snarl of sheer frustration.
"Get up!" Julian hissed harshly, his voice a low, venomous growl meant only for her ears. He hauled her to her feet with a sudden jerk that left her swaying unsteadily on her white heels. Clara stumbled, clutching her stomach with her free hand, her eyes wide with a mixture of pain and sudden, sharp fear. The physical roughness of the act crossed a boundary that could no longer be ignored or excused away as mere stress. Around the room, the polite murmur of dinner conversation died completely. The illusion of a civilized evening was shattered beyond repair. Several patrons dropped their gazes, unable to bear witness to the abuse, while a few others reacted with instinctive indignation, whispering among themselves about the blatant cruelty unfolding right before their eyes.
Clara righted herself, tears pricking the corners of her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. She pulled her arm free from his grip with a sudden, unexpected strength born of pure self-preservation. Julian stared at her, momentarily stunned that she had dared to resist his authority in public. His chest rose and fell rapidly, his eyes darting to the surrounding tables to gauge the damage to his public image. He raised a finger to point at her, preparing another wave of verbal degradation, but the ambient noise of the restaurant had fundamentally changed. The collective gaze of the room was no longer just uncomfortable; it was heavy, judgmental, and dangerously focused on his aggressive posture. The air grew dense, charged with an electric tension that portended an immediate, unavoidable collision with consequences he had never anticipated.
