Chapter 3 - Midnight on the Interstate

The hum of the SUV’s engine was the only sound filling the cabin as they sped down the darkened interstate. The dashboard clock glowed a harsh 1:15 AM. Maya sat in the passenger seat, staring out at the blurred neon lights of the city skyline, her fingers still stained with invisible fabric dye. In the backseat, Mina sat in absolute, simmering silence, her arms crossed tightly over her grey patterned dress, her breathing shallow and erratic. Their mother sat beside Mina, staring blankly out the window, occasionally pressing her fingertips to her temples as if trying to ward off a splitting migraine.

Arthur kept his hands firmly at ten and two on the steering wheel, his jaw clenched so tightly a muscle twitched near his temple. No one had spoken a single word since they left the house. The destruction of the gown and the handbag hung over them like a toxic fog, poisoning the air.

Maya cleared her throat softly, breaking the agonizing quiet. "Dad… we don't have to go tonight. The boutique won't even be open. We can just wait until—"

"The boutique is owned by my old college roommate, Marcus," Arthur interrupted, his voice clipped and devoid of warmth. "I called him from the driveway. He’s opening the doors at two in the morning because my daughter needs a dress, and the person who destroyed it needs to learn that actions carry immediate, unavoidable consequences."

Mina shifted violently in the backseat, her voice dripping with venom. "You're only doing this because you've always hated me. You think Maya is a saint because she plays the piano and gets straight A’s, while I’m just the screw-up who actually says what everyone else is thinking."

"Mina, stop," their mother whispered, her voice trembling with exhaustion. "Please, just stop talking."

"No, I won't stop!" Mina snapped, leaning forward so her face was illuminated by the dashboard lights. "You’ve coddled her her entire life. She makes one mistake, and you blame me. I didn't even touch that stupid dress until she left it unattended on the table. She wanted me to ruin it!"

Maya whipped her head around, her eyes wide with shock and hurt. "Are you insane? I spent months on that dress! Why would I want you to destroy it?"

"To play the victim!" Mina yelled, her voice cracking. "Just like you're doing right now!"

May you like

Arthur flicked his indicator, steering the vehicle sharply onto the exit ramp that led directly into the heart of the historic downtown district. As the SUV rounded the corner, the headlights caught a dark figure standing ominously by the rear entrance of the locked boutique.
