Chapter 2 - The Price of Leather and Lies

The heavy silence stretched like a taut wire ready to snap. Arthur’s chest heaved beneath his dark maroon shirt as he stared down at the ruined gown, his gaze locking onto the glittering shards of glass and severed threads. The anger in his eyes wasn't loud; it was the cold, terrifying kind of wrath that preceded a storm. He didn’t scream, and he didn’t curse. Instead, he slowly bent down, his joints cracking in the dead quiet of the bedroom, and picked up the designer leather handbag that Mina had carelessly tossed onto the armchair earlier that afternoon.
Mina took a half-step backward, her grey patterned dress whispering against the hardwood floor. "Dad… wait. It was an accident. The scissors slipped—"
"Quiet," Arthur interrupted, his voice dropping an octave. He didn't look at Mina as he spoke. He turned the expensive, Italian-crafted leather bag over in his large hands. It was the bag he had gifted Mina for her academic excellence just a month prior, a luxury item she had bragged about to every neighbor on the block.
Without another word, Arthur raised the heavy-duty shears. With one swift, merciless motion, he drove the blades straight through the supple leather front panel, slicing the designer logo clean in half.
Maya gasped, clapping her hands over her mouth, the tears freezing on her cheeks. "Dad, stop! You don't have to—"
"Relax, it’s just a piece of leather," Arthur said coldly, his eyes fixed on the expanding gash in the bag. He pulled the blades apart, ruining the interior silk lining with a sickening ripping sound. "Pack your stuff, both of you. We’re buying your graduation dress first."
Mina let out a sharp, choked cry, lunging forward as if to snatch the ruined purse from his grip, but stopped short under the weight of his glare. "You ruined my bag! You actually ruined it!"
"I taught you the value of what you destroy," Arthur replied, stepping over the threshold and tossing the mutilated handbag onto the hallway rug. "You have ten minutes to pack a single bag. We are driving to the downtown boutique tonight, and you are going to look each other in the eye while Maya picks out whatever she wants, paid for by the money I saved for your college laptops."

Maya froze, her heart dropping into her stomach. The college laptop fund? That meant—
