Chapter 13 - The Heir to the Ashes

The heavy brass key gleamed in the harsh beam of the flashlight. Arthur stared at it, his massive frame trembling as the pieces of a puzzle he had spent twelve years trying to bury finally slammed together with brutal clarity.

"You didn't just ruin my dress because you were jealous," Maya said, the realization hitting her with the force of a physical blow. She stepped back, putting distance between herself and her sister. "You set this whole thing up. You contacted the buyer, you brought us to this boutique, and you led us down here."

Mina didn't deny it. She tossed the heavy key from hand to hand, the metal clinking softly in the damp air. "Someone had to finish it, Maya. Dad thought he could burn the estate down, take the insurance money, and pretend his older brother never existed. But debts don't burn away in fires. They just wait underground for someone to dig them up."

"You were three years old when the house burned," their mother sobbed, sinking against the concrete wall, her hands covering her face. "How could you possibly remember any of this? We never spoke of it!"

"The house didn't need to tell me," a new voice echoed from the top of the brick staircase.

Everyone spun around. The heavy antique mirror at the top of the stairs had swung open an inch, casting a narrow shaft of warm, golden light down into the dark basement. Standing in the gap was a tall figure silhouetted against the bright interior of the boutique—a young man with familiar dark eyes and a jawline that mirrored Arthur’s own.

"Hello, Uncle Arthur," the voice said, smooth, calm, and laced with quiet venom. "It’s been a long time."

Arthur rose slowly to his feet, clutching the leather ledger against his chest like a shield. His breathing was ragged, his eyes fixed on the figure standing in the doorway. "Julian… Everyone said you were in the east wing when the fire started. They said you didn't make it out."

"I didn't make it out through the front door," Julian replied, stepping halfway down the crumbling steps, the light catching his tailored grey suit. "Because you bolted it from the outside. But I managed to crawl through the coal chute in the cellar—the very cellar you forgot to check when you collected your payout."

Maya looked between Julian and her father, her mind reeling. "Your… your nephew? Dad, you told us all your relatives died in that fire."

"He lied to keep the estate," Julian said, his eyes locking onto Arthur with a cold, unforgiving intensity. "He lied to build his new life, his new business, and his perfect family. But a house built on ashes always collapses in the end."

Before Arthur could take a step toward the stairs, the sound of police sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder by the second, their red and blue lights flashing wildly through the frosted glass windows of the boutique above.
