Chapter 11 - Locked in the Past

The heavy thud of the deadbolt sliding home vibrated through the damp stone walls of the basement, sealing off the only known exit. Marcus’s muffled voice echoed faintly from the other side of the wooden partition, shouting something incomprehensible as the antique mirror locked firmly into place.
Arthur spun around, abandoning the tape player, and charged up the brick staircase. He slammed his shoulder against the underside of the hidden door, throwing his weight against it again and again, but the heavy iron hinges held firm.
"Marcus!" Arthur roared, his voice cracking with fury and panic. "Open this door right now! Open it!"
No answer came from above, save for the faint, rhythmic scraping of furniture being dragged across the parquet floor of the boutique—heavy display tables and racks of clothing being piled against the wall to block the mechanism from the outside.
Maya stood frozen at the base of the stairs, her hands clutching the sparkling fabric of her dress. The reality of the situation crashed over her in cold waves. They weren't just trapped in a forgotten basement; they were trapped by a man they had trusted, a man who had stood beside them in the shop just moments before.
"He locked us in," Maya whispered, her voice trembling as she looked at her mother, who had collapsed onto one of the metal filing cabinets, weeping quietly into her hands. "Mom, why did Marcus lock us down here? Who is Marcus?"
Her mother didn't answer right away. She raised her tear-streaked face, her eyes haunted by memories she had spent a lifetime trying to bury. "Marcus isn't just an old college roommate, Maya. He was your uncle’s closest friend. He was the one who helped your father secure the estate deeds the week before the fire."
Mina remained sitting at the wooden desk, her expression completely detached, her fingers idly tracing the yellowed plastic casing of the tape player. "He didn't betray us," Mina said softly, her voice echoing strangely in the confined space. "He just made sure the truth finally came out. Dad had it coming."
Arthur abandoned his assault on the door, descending the steps slowly, his chest heaving, his face slick with sweat. He looked at Mina, his eyes burning with a dangerous mix of fear and rage. "You knew," Arthur hissed, stopping just inches from her chair. "You knew Marcus was down here. You planned this with him when you ruined Maya’s dress tonight."
Mina looked up, a slow, chilling smile returning to her lips—the exact same smile she had worn when she slashed the gown upstairs. "I didn't plan it, Dad. The house told me. Just like it told Grandpa what you did in the dark."
May you like
Before Arthur could grab her by the collar, a low, mechanical grinding sound echoed from beneath the floorboards near the filing cabinets, followed by the slow, grinding hiss of a hidden wall panel sliding open in the far corner of the basement.
