Chapter 5 - Ghosts of the Past

"You shouldn't have come here, Maya," Marcus said, his voice dropping the commanding edge of the loudspeaker and turning into a raspy, exhausted whisper. He lowered the heavy flashlight, letting the beam drop to the gravel between them. He looked older, weathered by years of hiding, wearing a faded canvas jacket that smelled faintly of woodsmoke and gasoline. His gaze drifted past her shoulder, fixing on the terrified teenager bound to the steering wheel. A heavy sigh escaped Marcus’s lips, carrying the weight of a decade of secrets. "Arthur and Evelyn really thought they could protect you by handing you the keys and hoping you'd drive straight into a ditch instead of finding this place."

Maya’s breath caught in her throat. The betrayal tasted like ash. "You're dead," she managed to whisper, her voice trembling with a mix of fury and disbelief. "They said you died in the fire at the old family cabin. They cried at your funeral." Marcus let out a bitter, humorless laugh that sounded like dry leaves scraping across pavement. "Fires leave a lot of ashes, Maya. Conveniently enough, ashes are very hard to DNA-test. Your father and I built this mess together twenty years ago, and now he’s trying to tie up loose ends by sending his only daughter to clean up his blood."

Before Maya could process the crushing weight of the accusation, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the shadows behind the nearest warehouse. Marcus’s expression instantly hardened from exhaustion to pure terror. He lunged forward, grabbing Maya by the shoulders and shoving her hard toward the floorboards of the abandoned car just as a deafening crack split the night air, shattering the driver-side window into a million glittering shards of glass. Marcus grunted, stumbling backward, clutching his shoulder as a dark crimson stain began to bloom rapidly across the front of his canvas jacket.

Maya screamed, scrambling into the footwell of the car alongside the bound teenager. The hidden sniper in the dark was reloading for a second shot, and the red dot of a laser sight began to trace a lazy, menacing path across the dashboard. Maya’s hand, still clutching the car keys, brushed against a hidden release latch underneath the steering column. With a mechanical thud, a secret compartment sprang open, revealing not documents or money, but a heavy, matte-black revolver and a handwritten note in her father’s unmistakable handwriting: Protect the truth, no matter who pulls the trigger.
